The rainy season brings cool, pleasant air, but also silently causes a series of skin and hair problems.

Ms. Vishalakshi Viswanath, a dermatologist at KIMS Hospital (India) shared the causes of dandruff in the rainy season, according to Hindustan Times .

High humidity

The rainy season is a time when humidity in the air is always high. This creates an ideal environment for Malassezia, a yeast that naturally lives on the scalp, to thrive, leading to flaking and itching.

Wet hair and exposure to rain water

Leaving your hair wet after getting caught in the rain without drying it off promptly will leave your scalp in a damp state. This is the ideal condition for fungus to grow and make dandruff worse.

Sweat and excess oil cause dandruff to develop.

Hot and humid air makes the scalp sweat more, and the sebaceous glands are also active. Combined, the scalp becomes oily, prone to inflammation and irritation, causing dandruff to develop.

Afraid to wash hair in rainy season

Many people tend to avoid washing their hair during the rainy season, for fear of catching a cold or because their hair is difficult to dry. This causes oil and dirt to accumulate over time, creating conditions for fungus to grow and dandruff to spread.

Ms Vishwanath also warns that if dandruff is not treated promptly, the condition can progress to seborrheic dermatitis.

Not only causing discomfort, seborrheic dermatitis can also affect areas outside the scalp such as the face, forehead, nose and chin area. More seriously, it also causes hair loss, damaged scalp and acne.

To prevent and control dandruff during the monsoon, Dr. Vishwanath advises people to pay attention to scalp hygiene.

Accordingly, you should limit leaving your hair wet for a long time, especially after being in the rain. In addition, tying your hair when it is still wet will also clog your scalp, making it prone to dandruff.

Even if it's raining, you should still wash your hair 2–3 times a week. Gently dry your hair and choose a mild shampoo that doesn't contain harsh detergents.

You can also supplement foods rich in zinc, omega-3s, vitamins, and antioxidants to support scalp health.
