However, Mr. Tusk also confirmed that many countries supporting Ukraine are dependent on this fuel supplied by Russia.
The new sanctions package is expected to focus on preventing sanctions evasion, especially for goods that could be used in the military. The sanctions package will also involve a range of individuals and legal entities.
Earlier, AFP reported that an EU official said on January 19 that the alliance is expected to adopt a new package of sanctions against Moscow next February, marking the second anniversary of the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

EU officials said that the bloc's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell "wants to increase economic pressure on Russia right on the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine".
European diplomats admit that the 27-nation bloc is finding it increasingly difficult to agree on options for a new package of sanctions against Russia aimed at restricting its financial resources.
