Affected by the phenomenon "Front Meiyu", the North has floods and rains

On June 27, heavy rain continued to occur in the Northwest and Viet Bac regions of our country due to bad weather. According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and meteorological experts, the focus of the flood is from the evening of June 28 to July 3 (some places are forecast to have over 500mm of rain). The cause is a low pressure trough operating in southern China that has moved south, combined with high-altitude wind convergence (3,000-5,000m) and a low-lying vortex in Northwest Vietnam, which has caused and will cause widespread heavy rain in the North.

Weather experts confirmed that this is the “Front Meiyu” phenomenon - originating from the meeting of cold air masses from the North and hot and humid air masses from the South, extending from the Tibetan Plateau through southern China to northern Vietnam, often appearing during the rainy season (peaking in June and July). Under the impact of the “Front Meiyu” phenomenon and the low pressure trough, southern China is currently also experiencing prolonged heavy rain, causing serious flooding.

* To ensure the safety of people's lives and limit damage to people's and state's property, on June 27, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed the Prime Minister's telegram on proactively responding to heavy rain in the North.

The Prime Minister requested ministries, branches and localities to organize inspections of residential areas, especially residential areas along rivers, streams and slopes to promptly detect areas at risk of being affected by landslides, flash floods and deep flooding in order to proactively evacuate and move out of dangerous areas when there is heavy rain. Organize on-duty shifts, deploy flood prevention and control work, ensure the safety of dikes and dams according to the alarm level; proactively arrange forces and means to control, guide and support traffic safety, especially through overflow tunnels, deeply flooded roads and fast-flowing water.

* Due to heavy rain in the upper Viet Bac, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has ordered the opening of a bottom spillway gate of Tuyen Quang Hydropower Reservoir at 2:00 p.m. on June 27 to reduce the pressure on the reservoir and create capacity to receive early-season floods. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has requested localities such as Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc and Hanoi to ensure the safety of people and organizations and businesses operating on and along the river in the downstream, especially fish cage farms, water transport vehicles, ferry terminals, construction works, sand and gravel mining, etc. In the face of unusual natural disasters in 2025, the Minister of Industry and Trade has just issued Directive 11 requiring the safety of the hydropower system and the national power grid during the 2025 storm season.
