The ceremony was an opportunity to look back on the 80-year journey of building and growing the Vietnamese Diplomatic sector, and was also a source of joy and pride for the entire Party, army and people.
Looking back on the 80-year journey, General Secretary To Lam pointed out the core reasons for the mettle and success of Vietnamese diplomacy; affirmed that the tradition, achievements and glorious history of 80 years have left the Vietnamese diplomacy with great lessons that remain valuable today and in the future. Those lessons are: The crystallization of revolutionary theory and practice; steadfastness in national and ethnic interests; combining national strength with the strength of the times; steadfastness in principles, flexibility in strategies; taking research, forecasting and strategic advice as the basis; building a contingent of cadres as the key of the key; linking diplomacy with the people's hearts.
In the context of the world undergoing epochal changes, General Secretary To Lam said that the Vietnamese diplomatic sector is facing a historic mission, to maintain a peaceful and stable environment, creating favorable conditions for the successful implementation of the country's major breakthroughs, especially the two 100-year goals, contributing to bringing the country into an era of prosperous development.
To achieve that goal, General Secretary To Lam requested the Foreign Affairs sector to thoroughly grasp and focus on implementing a number of major orientations. First, to build a comprehensive, modern, professional diplomacy imbued with Vietnamese identity. Second, to ensure the highest national interests on the basis of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international law. Third , to enhance Vietnam's contributions to world politics, the global economy, human civilization, to peace, cooperation, and development in the region and the world. Fourth, to improve the quality and effectiveness of research, forecasting, and strategic advice on foreign affairs. Fifth, to build a team of "both red and professional" diplomatic staff, meeting the requirements and tasks in the new era.
General Secretary To Lam expressed his hope: “I firmly believe that Vietnamese diplomacy - with the mettle, intelligence, spirit and character of the Vietnamese people in the new era - will continue to be the pioneering and core force with glorious responsibilities: creating and maintaining a peaceful and stable environment, pioneering in connecting cooperation, opening up and attracting development resources, and constantly improving the country's position.”
In his response, on behalf of all officials, civil servants and employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son thanked the Party, State, Government and the General Secretary for their deep concern for the diplomatic sector, considering this a great source of encouragement and extremely important orientation for the work of the diplomatic sector in the coming period.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister affirmed that with the mettle and spirit of Vietnamese diplomacy that has been forged over thousands of years of the nation's history and tempered and matured in the Ho Chi Minh era over the past 80 years, Vietnamese diplomacy will certainly continue to write new chapters in the country's journey of development, bringing the country "on par with the world powers" as Uncle Ho always wished.
