Star anise is a small tree 2-6m high, the whole tree is slender and diamond-shaped, green all year round, the trunk grows straight, the branches are easy to break. The leaves grow in clusters of 3-4 leaves at the top of the branches, have petioles, the leaf blade is intact, 8-12cm long, 3-4cm wide, and has a fragrant smell when crushed. If the star anise tree is planted and cared for well, it will flower after 4 years of planting. Star anise trees usually flower from March, May, until July, September, the star anise flowers begin to ripen and people can harvest.

Normally, an anise tree must be 5 years old or older to be harvested, and only 2 harvests are allowed each year, so star anise is already rare and even more valuable. The yield from the 5th-6th year is 0.5-1 kg/tree. From the 20th year onwards, the tree will give a stable yield of up to 40-50 kg/tree. If the star anise tree is planted and cared for properly, it will give high and stable yield, extending the harvest period to 80 years. Vietnam has an anise growing area of about 40,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in Lang Son and Cao Bang with an annual output of more than 16,000 tons.

Vietnam and China are the only two countries that can produce star anise in large quantities thanks to favorable conditions. Our country has an anise growing area of about 40,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in Lang Son and Cao Bang with an annual output of more than 16,000 tons.
