University admissions in 2025: Don't put all your eggs in one basket

From now until 5:00 p.m. on July 28, candidates can register and adjust their university admission wishes on the general admission system of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) an unlimited number of times. Admissions experts note that to increase the chance of being admitted to their favorite major, candidates should not put too few wishes, nor should they put all their wishes in one school in the style of "putting all their eggs in one basket".

Floor points drop sharply

The floor score or the threshold to ensure input quality is the minimum score that the university sets for accepting candidates' applications. Only candidates with test scores that meet the floor score or higher are eligible to apply. Up to this point, many universities have announced the floor score for university admission in 2025. Notably, the floor score for considering high school graduation exam scores at many schools has decreased sharply compared to 2024.

Hanoi National University has just announced the minimum score for university admission in 2025. Accordingly, the minimum score for admission based on high school graduation exam scores in 2025 is 19 points, down 1 point compared to 2024. This minimum score has not been multiplied by the coefficient, including regional and subject priority points, if any. The minimum score for admission to Ho Chi Minh City National University for high school graduation exam scores is from 16 to 24 points. Hanoi University of Science and Technology has also announced the minimum score for admission based on high school graduation exam scores at 19.5 points for technical majors and 19 points for economics , education, and foreign languages. Hanoi University of Commerce and Industry and Vietnam Women's Academy both have a minimum score for admission at 15 points.

The minimum admission score of FPT University is from 17.5 to 18.5 points; the minimum admission score based on the high school graduation exam results of Hanoi University of Architecture is 16-22 points. The minimum admission score based on the high school graduation exam results of the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology is 19 points, down three points compared to last year. The minimum admission score of the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi is from 22-24 points. The minimum admission score of Hanoi University is from 22/40 points or more, including the total of three graduation exam subjects, in which Foreign Language is multiplied by a coefficient of 2. For military schools, the expected minimum admission score for admission based on the 2025 high school graduation exam scores is 18 points...

According to the analysis of admissions experts, the high school graduation exam scores have fluctuated a lot, especially in the subjects of Math, English, Chemistry, Biology, which are core subjects in the admission subject groups of many schools. Therefore, it is necessary for many universities to adjust the floor scores to maintain competitiveness and not affect the general target, while ensuring the safety of the recruitment source. However, experts also note that the floor score is the score that qualifies for application, not the admission standard score, so candidates should not be subjective about the downward trend of the floor score. The actual admission standard score will depend on the number of candidates registering and the candidates' abilities, so it will be very different from the admission floor score.

Need to have appropriate strategy for applying for admission

According to the 2025 enrollment regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training , this year all universities will not determine enrollment quotas according to each method or combination of enrollment, but only determine enrollment quotas according to each major/training program. When considering enrollment, the Ministry of Education and Training 's enrollment system will automatically select the highest score among the methods/combinations that candidates have, ensuring the highest benefits for candidates. Therefore, it is very important to develop a strategy for setting university enrollment preferences.

MSc. Pham Thanh Ha, Deputy Head of Training Management Department, Foreign Trade University, said that when placing wishes on the general admission system of the Ministry of Education and Training, there are three basic principles that candidates need to pay attention to. The first principle is that when placing wishes on the system, candidates need to divide them into three different groups of wishes: The safe group of wishes for majors with previous year's benchmark scores that may be lower than the candidates' current scores; the target group of wishes, within the candidates' ability; the dream group of wishes placed on majors/schools with benchmark scores slightly higher than the candidates'.

The second principle is that candidates should not choose too few wishes and the wishes should be arranged in order of priority, the most favorite wish should be placed first. The general admission system will run from top to bottom, candidates who are admitted to a wish will stop at that wish. The third principle is that they should not focus on placing all their wishes in one school. For example, if a candidate loves the economics - business sector, they can put them in the top, middle and lower groups of schools to increase the chance of being admitted to the major they love.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, also noted that the general admission system of the Ministry of Education and Training will close at 5:00 p.m. on July 28, so candidates need to remember this time. From now until then, candidates need to update the data used for admission such as: Foreign language certificates, competency assessment results, regional priority certificates, subjects, etc. to avoid missing bonus points according to regulations. After this time, schools will base on the data on the system to conduct admission.

According to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Thao, although the Ministry of Education and Training does not control the number of admission wishes, candidates need to remember to put their most desired wishes in priority position. Because if the candidate is eligible to be admitted to any wish, the admission system will stop at that wish and will not consider further. In addition, candidates also need to pay attention to the time to pay the admission fee because if they register their wishes without paying the fee, the registration is considered unsuccessful. In addition, they also need to declare and update the information proving the admission according to the requirements of the universities to ensure their rights.
