VnExpressVnExpress24/01/2024

The incident occurred in Bayanzurkh, the largest district in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, early this morning, when a tanker carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) made a sharp turn at an intersection and crashed into a moving car. "The LNG gas leaked out and caught fire, leading to an explosion," said the Mongolian National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

At least six people were killed, including three firefighters, and 14 were injured. Most of the victims suffered burns, while one child suffered gas poisoning.

Video posted online by local residents shows a massive fire, followed by explosions, engulfing the entire street and surrounding vehicles. Windows from nearby apartments and schools were shattered, and a tanker truck and several nearby cars were burned.

NEMA evacuated 80 residents in apartments near the explosion and sealed off the scene to clear the rubble.

"This shows very bad planning. All tankers, whether carrying gas or not, should only be allowed to move outside the city limits," said Ankhbayar Galbadrakh, whose vehicle was burned in the incident.
