According to Kazinform News Agency, on June 8, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the number of COVID-19 infections is on the rise again, related to the appearance of a new variant called NB.1.8.1 that is currently under further investigation.

While the new variant is not as dangerous as previous strains, the organization notes that the continued evolution of the virus could lead to new waves of infection in the future.

The WHO stressed that the current increase is consistent with the seasonal pattern of the virus. However, thanks to herd immunity and high vaccination rates, the number of cases requiring hospitalization or intensive care remains low.

The organization assessed the current global risk level of COVID-19 as “high” and called on countries not to be complacent, to strengthen medical surveillance, and to integrate COVID-19 into seasonal respiratory disease prevention strategies to ensure timely response.

In addition, WHO also needs to combat misinformation that causes public anxiety, encourage people to strictly follow preventive measures and follow the latest and most accurate updates on official health websites.

Previously, a group of scientists at UFU (Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, Brazil) - a prestigious university in many fields of scientific, engineering, medical and technological research - also developed a new diagnostic system, capable of accurately detecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus in saliva samples. This is expected to help support early detection of cases in the community.
