As the Head of the Con Village Farmers' Association, Mr. Thu has the opportunity to access scientific and technical knowledge by actively participating in training courses, researching and learning through books, newspapers, the internet, and production experiences of good economic models. From there, he decided to invest in building an economic model based on the short-term method of supporting the long-term, working while accumulating experience as a basis for gradually expanding the scale of production.
From a few acres of land for growing cassava and rice, he reclaimed and expanded production. Up to now, his family's cassava growing area has reached 1 hectare and rice growing area of 4 acres. Thanks to the correct application of technical processes, his family's crops have increased in yield every year, ensuring food on the spot. He also accumulated capital to continue expanding the economic model. In 2023, through the capital guaranteed by the Commune Farmers' Association, Mr. Thu borrowed 100 million VND to invest in building barns for raising sows and pigs.
From a small-scale livestock farm, his family has now built a fairly large-scale model with 21 pens, an average of 20 m2/pen. The pens have feeding troughs and automatic drinking water systems. The pen system is built far from residential areas, ensuring environmental hygiene. As a construction worker during the off-season, all the pens were built by Mr. Thu.
He also invested in buying a rice mill to serve his family and at the same time take advantage of the source of rice bran to feed the pigs. “My family’s economic model is completely proactive in producing local breeds, limiting investment costs and limiting diseases from outside. The pigs are cared for with the right techniques, monitored and vaccinated properly, so they develop smoothly and do not have any diseases. On average, each year I sell pigs for meat, and after deducting expenses, I earn a profit of over 120 million VND,” Mr. Thu shared.
Not only stopping at the agricultural economic model, Mr. Thu boldly opened more industries. When the basic agricultural model was stable, Mr. Thu gradually handed over the management to his wife to take advantage of learning more about carpentry and construction. Thanks to his diligence, hard work, and learning while working, his skills became more and more solid.
He proactively purchased machinery and equipment for both carpentry and construction, and took on contracts for housing construction projects and other projects in the locality as well as in some neighboring areas. With his enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and prestige, his customers have increased day by day. Mr. Thu also actively participates in social work in Con village. As the village team leader, deputy head of the security and order team, village health team ... he is willing to share his experiences with members and villagers to develop production together and gradually escape poverty.
Mr. Thu added: “With the proactive approach of resource management, using short-term to sustain long-term, using initial efficiency to gradually expand the scale, up to now my family has had a fairly effective economic model, as a driving force for development in the coming time. In the coming time, my family plans to convert a part of the cassava land to build barns to increase the pig herd. Purchase more machinery and process pig feed, taking the livestock model as the main focus”.
The diversified business model helps Mr. Thu’s family minimize risks due to market fluctuations, increase income and improve their lives. Thereby contributing to a more sustainable development of the rural mountainous economy.
