Destinations that attract international filmmakers
In recent years, many famous films have helped make Da Nang more attractive and appealing, especially to tourists . The most impressive is the Hollywood action blockbuster “The Protégé” which shows off the brilliant Dragon Bridge and Da Nang’s modern international airport.
Then the Korean movie "Taxi Driver 2" also made many Vietnamese audiences excited when the movie was set in 3 big cities: Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Long and Da Nang .
Along with Da Nang, Ninh Binh is also a destination that has attracted many domestic and international filmmakers in recent times. In addition to Trang An landscape recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage, Ninh Binh also impresses with its majestic limestone mountains, magical cave systems and spiritual architectural works bearing historical and cultural imprints such as Bai Dinh Pagoda and Hoa Lu Ancient Capital.
All of these create a perfect picture for historical film projects, nature exploration films or experiential tourism. Therefore, Ninh Binh has been chosen as the setting for many famous films such as “Kong: Skull Island”, Vietnamese film projects such as “Thien Menh Anh Hung”, “Tam Cam: Chuyen Chua Chua Ke”…
Phu Yen - the locality once famous for the setting of the movie "I see yellow flowers on the green grass" also continuously leads the list of 10 provinces with the highest Film Crew Attraction Index and Film Production Environment in Vietnam (PAI). According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Phu Yen, in 2024, the province welcomed 6 domestic and foreign film crews. Especially after the movie "Once Upon a Time There Was a Love Story", the beautiful scenery in Phu Yen once again created a special attraction for domestic and foreign tourists.
Gold mine waiting to be exploited
Vietnam has many scenic spots with typical regional beauty, from the mountains and forests of the Northwest, the Ha Giang stone plateau to Ha Long Bay, the ancient capital of Hue... These locations not only provide authentic settings, but also help filmmakers save on costs for setting up scenes and recreating spaces.
According to Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Nguyen Trung Khanh, Vietnam is not only beautiful in landscape but also rich in culture and people, a fertile land for unique stories with 54 ethnic groups living together, creating a diverse cultural picture of customs, festivals, cuisine, costumes, architecture...
“Not only does Vietnam have beautiful scenery, but it also has a young, dynamic, enthusiastic and well-trained filmmaking team in many positions such as assistant director, cameraman, lighting, art designer, production manager, on-site interpreter... In addition, compared to many countries in the region and around the world, production costs in Vietnam are currently very competitive. From labor costs, services, accommodation, travel... allowing producers to optimize their budgets, devoting more resources to the creative quality of the film" - Mr. Khanh emphasized.
Associate Professor Dr. Do Lenh Hong Tu - Chairman of the Vietnam Cinema Association said that, according to the experience of countries around the world, to attract many film crews, there must be 7 factors, including a large studio system; professional team; good technology in terms of machinery and equipment according to world standards; traffic environment; preferential policies... In particular, a decisive factor is legal procedures, which must be truly open, creating the most favorable conditions for film crews.
From practical experience when directly bringing the blockbuster film crew “Kong: Skull Island” to Vietnam, Mr. Nguyen Chau A - General Director of Oxalis Adventure Company believes that in order to continue to strongly attract international film crews, Vietnam needs to develop clear incentive policies, especially for projects with global influence, contributing to promoting the country's image in the international arena.
In addition, tourism and service businesses need to proactively promote communication and marketing, actively approach filmmakers through conferences, seminars, international film festivals, etc. to promote destinations, potentials and strengths of Vietnam.
In particular, organizing famtrips for directors, producers, and film crews to conduct field surveys in potential localities is a practical solution to introduce the landscape, natural context, and service systems there. At the same time, it is necessary to coordinate with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to organize conferences and events to promote destinations in key markets to create attraction, making potential provinces the top choice of international film crews.
