According to the announcement of the Global Independent Market Research Network (WIN) on July 16, Vietnam scored high in many categories related to awareness, acceptance, trust and attitude towards artificial intelligence (AI).

The survey was conducted by Indochina Research Vietnam in 4 major cities from December 2024 to January 2025, with a sample size of 900 people.

Vietnam ranks 3rd globally in terms of trust in AI (65.6 points) and 5th in terms of acceptance of this technology (71.6 points).

Vietnam's overall index is calculated based on the average of 7 AI-related component indices.

Indicators related to interest, comfort in use, and usefulness of AI also exceeded the world average.

However, the actual level of usage is quite modest. Vietnam's AI Usage Index reached 37.6 points, ranking 17th out of 40 countries - the lowest among the component indices. Although about 60% of survey participants have used AI, only 3% use it daily.

The AI user group is mainly between the ages of 18–34, especially concentrated in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi . In the 18–24 age group, 89% of people in Hanoi and 87% in Ho Chi Minh City said they had used AI. In contrast, in Da Nang and Can Tho, the usage rate is significantly lower.

The disparities between regions and age groups are stark. In Da Nang, only 1 in 10 people aged 55–64 have had any exposure to AI technology.

As people age, their use of AI declines – a trend that is consistent with data from other countries.

Mr. Xavier Depouilly, General Director of Indochina Research Vietnam, commented: “The younger the age, the higher the level of AI usage – this is a global trend that Vietnam is not an exception to. Although the frequency of usage is still low, the young generation of Vietnam is approaching new technology with a proactive spirit, contributing to the process of economic growth and digital transformation.”

Along with their openness to AI, Vietnamese people also expressed many concerns. 52% of respondents were concerned about how AI collects and uses personal data, while 48% were worried that AI could replace humans in their jobs.

Notably, only 36% of survey respondents expressed concern about the potential for AI to create misinformation – the lowest level of concern among the groups.

While this is a top concern in many European and American countries, Vietnamese people prioritize more practical issues such as privacy and employment.

Vietnam’s sixth place in the World AI Index puts it on the global tech map, but experts say the country needs to take stronger action to realize its potential.

Some of the proposals put forward include:

• Expand access to AI beyond major cities, especially to older or less technologically accessible populations.

• Strengthen education and communication about AI to reduce concerns and improve social understanding.

• Building trust through transparent, secure AI systems with clear legal corridors.

“The high ranking should not obscure the fact that there are still large segments of the population that do not have access to AI. This is an opportunity to accelerate the experimentation, use and dissemination of AI more widely,” the report stated.

In the context of AI increasingly affecting the way people live and work, Vietnam is considered to be in a favorable position for sustainable development, if it has a comprehensive and inclusive strategy.
