Recently, the International Energy Agency (IEA) published a report entitled "Multiple Benefits of Energy Efficiency". The report has expanded the perspective on energy efficiency, emphasizing that investing in energy efficiency does not simply help reduce energy consumption, but also brings many other benefits, positively impacting the entire economy , society and environment.
The report shows that over the past two decades, energy efficiency measures have saved more than 27 EJ of energy in IEA member countries alone, equivalent to 20% of total energy demand. Of this, the industry and services sectors contributed more than half of the total energy savings.
In addition, energy efficiency measures can also help reduce household electricity bills, contributing to reducing energy “poverty” and improving the ability to pay for essential services.
At the enterprise level, energy efficiency helps reduce operating costs, optimize production processes and increase product value. At the national level, it helps improve energy efficiency per unit of economic growth, thereby increasing competitiveness.
In terms of energy security and grid investment, improvements in energy efficiency have helped reduce fossil fuel imports by 20% in many IEA countries and reduced the risk of grid overload at peak times. Reducing demand at the source also saves on the cost of building new power plants and transmission lines.
The IEA report also shows the key role of energy efficiency in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for nearly one-fifth of global CO2 emissions reductions since 2010. At the same time, it contributes to improving air quality, public health, reducing hospitalization rates and premature deaths, especially among young children and the elderly.
In particular, the role of energy efficiency in creating jobs and economic growth is also emphasized. Every million USD invested can create between 5 and 22 jobs depending on the sector, while increasing property values and labor productivity.
