Outstanding advantage for U.23 Vietnam
Vietnam U23 defeated Laos U23 3-0 in the opening match of Group B of the Southeast Asian U23 Championship. A brace from central defender Nguyen Hieu Minh, along with a goal from Khuat Van Khang, helped coach Kim Sang-sik and his team have a perfect start to temporarily lead Group B.
If they win at least 1 point against U.23 Cambodia at 8:00 p.m. today (July 22), U.23 Vietnam will certainly enter the semi-finals as group leader. This is a task within the reach of Van Khang and his teammates, as U.23 Vietnam is at a level far superior to its opponents.

Cambodian youth football has improved over time. The proof is that in the 2025 AFC U-20 qualifiers, Cambodia U-20 shocked Bahrain U-20 with a score of 1-0 to finish second in the "death group". However, the capacity of Cambodian football is only at the level of occasionally training a good generation of players. As for the general level, for example the current Cambodian U-23 generation, football in the land of pagodas cannot expect much.
In the opening match, U.23 Cambodia only had a 1-1 draw against U.23 Laos, in a match where the young Cambodian team could not overwhelm their opponents. Although they played with ball control, aiming to deploy the ball systematically and sequentially with short passes, U.23 Cambodia played relatively spontaneously, disjointedly and relied heavily on individual technique. Although U.23 Cambodia's attacking players were agile and skillful, they lacked the "weirdness" to make a difference.
U.23 Vietnam only needs 1 point, but perhaps the goal is to win to not only get a ticket to the semi-finals, but also affirm their status as champions. In the match against U.23 Laos, coach Kim Sang-sik's students played moderately, conserving their energy, but still won 3-0. U.23 Vietnam may not have "warmed up" on the opening day, but in the second match, the performance must be more convincing, creating momentum for the next matches.
U.23 Thailand storms into the semi-finals?
Similar to U.23 Vietnam, U.23 Thailand has a great opportunity to participate in the semi-finals of U.23 Southeast Asia.
At 8:00 p.m. today (July 22), at the same time as the match between U.23 Vietnam and U.23 Cambodia, U.23 Thailand will face U.23 Myanmar. In the opening match, U.23 Thailand won 4-0 against U.23 Timor Leste. Meanwhile, U.23 Myanmar was held to a 4-4 draw by U.23 Timor Leste.
U.23 Thailand only needs 1 point to enter the semi-finals. That is an achievable goal, when the "War Elephants" have a very good force. Determining that the tournament is a stepping stone for the goal of SEA Games 33 held at home later this year, U.23 Thailand will participate in the tournament with the highest determination. The team from the land of the golden pagoda will win to enter the semi-finals, thereby taking one step closer to the championship.
