In the context of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technology gradually changing the way information is produced, distributed and received, the world press is facing unprecedented changes in working models, investigative methods, as well as professional ethics.
The objective and profound comments of two experienced international journalists, Mr. Nagayo Taniguchi, a Japanese journalist residing in the European Union (EU), and Mr. Alain Thomas, a French journalist, in an exchange with VNA reporters in Brussels have contributed to clarifying the media picture in the new era.
According to journalist Nagayo Taniguchi, AI is a calculation tool based on the average value of information, while the “analog” world is the sum of exceptional factors, emotions, surprises, things that cannot be digitized.
He believes that letting robots completely replace humans in the media is not only unfeasible, but also destroys the humanistic nature and cultural depth of journalism.
For his part, French journalist Alain Thomas assessed that current technological advances, especially AI and Big Data, are changing the core foundation of journalism, which is information collection and processing.
While asserting that hands-on access remains key to producing quality information, Mr. Thomas acknowledged that the speed of data collection and analysis enabled by AI is helping news organizations respond more promptly to the fast and diverse needs of the public.
However, he also warned that AI could overshadow the role of journalists if not properly controlled in terms of ethics and content direction.
“AI can suggest topics based on trends and tastes, but it cannot replace the analytical ability, professional sensitivity or political courage of journalists. Only professional journalists can handle information with the highest sense of responsibility, in line with the editorial direction and social values that the newsroom aims for,” Mr. Alain Thomas emphasized.

According to him, the biggest challenge facing journalism today is to create added value from the huge amount of information, through selecting the right issues, handling them deeply, and honestly conveying them to the public. This is especially important in the context of widespread “fake news”, which makes public opinion easily led or misled.
“Just as a doctor is not allowed to lie or give false hope to a patient, a journalist must be absolutely honest in communicating information. That is an unchangeable moral obligation,” he said.
Thus, although artificial intelligence and technology can assist journalism in collecting and processing information, the core values of journalism - truth, humanity, and ethics - must still be preserved and promoted by humans.
In that context, the prudence, creativity and sense of responsibility of each professional journalist will continue to be a solid foundation for the press to overcome challenges, take advantage of opportunities, and continue to serve the community in the digital age./.
