Diverse admission criteria and methods

In 2025, the military will continue to enroll students at two main training levels: Military University and Military College. Specifically, there will be 17 academies and officer schools enrolling more than 4,200 students to train university-level platoon-level officers.

For the Military College level, 4 officer schools and colleges are assigned to enroll 150 students to train technical and professional staff. Notably, the Air Force Officer School is the only unit that enrolls students at both university and college levels.

This year, Military schools apply 3 flexible admission methods.

Specifically: Method 1 conducts direct admission, with priority given to admission according to the university admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and regulations of the Ministry of National Defense .

Method 2 is based on the results of the competency assessment exam organized by Hanoi National University and Ho Chi Minh City National University in 2025 and method 3 is based on the results of the 2025 High School Graduation Exam.

Major General, Dr. Phung Thi Phu, Deputy Director of the Department of Military Training - Schools (General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army), spoke at the meeting.

The Military Recruitment Board of the Ministry of National Defense notes that candidates are allowed to register for all admission methods. This is considered to help maximize the chances of being admitted to military schools.

Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Van Thai, Head of the Examination and Training Quality Assurance Department, Department of Military Training - General Staff, said that the preliminary selection of military candidates in 2025 recorded positive signals. Accordingly, the total number of qualified applications for admission to 20 military academies and schools reached 33,205, an increase of nearly 42% compared to 2024.

Schools with a high number of outstanding applications include: Political Officer School with more than 6,700 applications, Military Technical Academy with nearly 5,000 applications, Border Guard Academy with more than 3,500 applications and Military Medical Academy with more than 3,200 applications.

Notably, the quality of the preliminary application documents is assessed as good, fully meeting the requirements of academies and schools, ensuring a high-quality source of students for the industry.

Priority admission and incentive bonus policies

According to Colonel Nguyen Van Thai, in 2025, the military will continue to apply the direct recruitment policy, and priority recruitment will continue to be implemented to attract and create conditions for candidates with special achievements.

Candidates eligible for direct admission include: Labor heroes, People's Armed Forces heroes, National emulation fighters who have graduated from high school; candidates who won first, second, or third prizes in national or international excellent student competitions or national or international science and technology competitions organized by the Ministry of Education and Training (within 3 years from the time of direct admission); candidates who are ethnic minorities with very few people, candidates with permanent residence for over 10 years or candidates with permanent residence for 3 years or more, studied for 3 years and graduated from high school in poor districts.

"In addition, the preferential admission policy also applies to candidates who have won national and international prizes but are not eligible for direct admission, candidates who have won consolation prizes in the national excellent student selection exam, and candidates who have won fourth prizes in national science and technology competitions. The admission process is carried out in accordance with the admission regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training, ensuring fairness and transparency," Colonel Nguyen Van Thai emphasized.

Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Van Thai, Head of the Department of Testing and Training Quality Assurance, Department of Military Training - General Staff, informed about the enrollment work of military schools in 2025.

An important new point in this year’s admissions is that schools are allowed to add bonus points to candidates with high achievements. The total admission score will consist of 3 components: the candidate’s test score (high school graduation exam results or competency assessment test scores), bonus points, and regional and target priority points.

Specifically, there are 3 groups of subjects that are awarded incentive points: Group 1: Students who won national and international excellent student awards (first, second, third, encouragement) or national and international science and technology awards (first, second, third, fourth) within 3 years.

Group 2: Candidates who graduated from high school in the year of admission, achieved Excellent academic performance and Good conduct in grades 10, 11, 12, and won first, second, and third prizes in the excellent student competition at the provincial and central city levels.

Group 3: Candidates who graduated from high school in the year of admission, achieved Excellent academic performance and Good conduct in grades 10, 11, and 12, and have one of the certificates of international competency assessment test results such as SAT (from 1068 points), ACT (from 18.0 points), IELTS (from 5.5 points) or TOEFL iBT (from 55 points).

Candidates who are eligible for multiple incentive points will only be considered for the highest incentive point. Regional and subject priority points are determined according to the Admission Regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. Candidates with a total exam score and incentive points of 22.5 points or more will have their priority points converted according to the formula of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Flexible scoring, registration and adjustment of wishes

Military schools agree to use a 30-point scale for admission, corresponding to the total score of 3 subjects in the admission combination from the results of the High School Graduation Exam on a 10-point scale. For the competency assessment test of Hanoi National University and Ho Chi Minh City National University, the score is also converted to a 30-point scale for admission.

It is noteworthy that candidates can register for admission based on the results of the competency assessment exam and submit preliminary application documents without limiting the number of wishes. However, schools only limit the number of schools to register for admission. This creates maximum conditions for candidates to choose and increases the chance of being admitted to the desired major.

The Military Recruitment Board of the Ministry of National Defense has also built a website to support candidates in registering for the exam at: https://tuyensinhquandoi.com.

Candidates also have the right to adjust their admission wishes, training majors, and admission combinations within the school group. Specifically, universities are divided into 2 groups, and colleges are allowed to adjust their own wishes. The time for registration and adjustment of wishes will be implemented according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training in 2025.

Conversion of foreign language scores and additional admission criteria

The representative of the Military Recruitment Board of the Ministry of National Defense said that converting foreign language scores from international certificates such as IELTS (from 5.5 points) or TOEFL iBT (from 55 points) into admission scores is a positive new point, creating advantages for candidates with good foreign language skills. However, the Academy of Military Science has separate regulations for Russian (TRKI-2 or higher) and Chinese (HSK-4 or higher) when considering admission to the corresponding language majors.

Note that home exam certificates will not be converted, and the certificates must be valid until August 22, 2025. In the case of candidates who have just taken the high school graduation exam in a foreign language and used a foreign language certificate to convert their scores, the option with the higher score will be given priority.

To ensure fairness in admission methods, the Ministry of National Defense has assigned the Military Technical Academy to preside over and coordinate with schools inside and outside the Army to develop a formula for converting equivalent scores between admission methods.

In particular, schools use the HCM City National University's competency assessment test and all exams of Hanoi National University for admission. Some academies also have specific regulations on the accepted competency assessment test codes.

In the case of admission to a certain score level, there are still quotas but the number of candidates with the same score is higher than the number of remaining quotas, the Military schools will use additional criteria such as component scores of the exams for admission, ensuring the selection of the most qualified candidates.
