From his sickbed, Pope Francis calls for world peace

(CLO) Pope Francis has called for prayers for war-torn areas from his hospital bed, after he was hospitalized with a respiratory infection.

The Vatican said the pope's illness prevented him from speaking directly to the faithful on Sunday.

On Sunday, in a written message released by the Vatican, Pope Francis sent prayers for world peace : "I pray above all for peace."

In his call for prayers for conflict-torn areas, the Pope specifically mentioned Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan and the Kivu region in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Since mid-February, the head of the Church has been hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. For three weeks, he has been unable to appear in public to preside over Sunday prayers in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.

Despite being in hospital, the Pope continues to run the Catholic Church. The Vatican said he had a "peaceful" night and is currently resting.
