In the past 2 weeks, the Provincial General Hospital has faced a serious shortage of blood for emergency and treatment purposes. There were times when the amount of blood in the blood bank was less than 200 units (normally it fluctuates between 500 - 600 units). This is the second time the Provincial General Hospital has faced a shortage of blood since the beginning of 2025. The reason is that the implementation of voluntary blood donation campaigns did not take place as planned.

To meet the blood demand for emergency and treatment not only for the Provincial General Hospital but also for other medical facilities in the province, the Provincial General Hospital has called on and mobilized cadres, civil servants, public employees, and workers to actively participate in voluntary blood donation programs and come directly to the hospital to donate blood.
Coming directly to the Department of Hematology - Blood Transfusion to donate a unit of blood, Duong Tan Dung (born 2007, Phuc Trach commune) shared: "While taking care of my father here, I heard that the hospital was short of blood and was calling for blood donations, so I took the opportunity to register to donate a unit of blood with the hope of contributing to helping the hospital have more blood to treat patients."
Previously, on the evening of July 8, upon receiving information that a patient had internal bleeding and severe anemia and needed an urgent transfusion of type O blood, while the blood reserve at the Provincial General Hospital had run out, through the connection of the Ha Tinh Police "Living Blood Bank" Club, 4 officers and soldiers of the Provincial Police quickly arrived at the Hematology - Blood Transfusion Department to donate 4 units of blood to rescue the patient.

Master Hoang Quoc Anh - Deputy Head of the Department of Hematology - Blood Transfusion said: "Since the call for blood donation until now, on average, every day there are about 5 - 10 cases of cadres, civil servants, employees, workers, students, and soldiers of the armed forces coming directly to the department to donate blood. Although the number is not large, these are extremely valuable units of blood to serve the daily needs of surgery and emergency when there is a shortage of blood. The fact that individuals volunteer to directly donate blood demonstrates responsibility and a noble humanitarian spirit."
In order to promptly replenish blood supplies, in addition to calling for direct blood donations, the provincial General Hospital has also proactively connected and coordinated with mass organizations to implement voluntary blood donation campaigns. Most recently, on July 14, the Provincial Youth Union and the Vietnam Youth Union of Ha Tinh province organized the Blood Donation Festival "Red Drops of Love". Through the program, over 250 units of blood were collected to supplement the hospital's blood reserve.

It is known that currently, some businesses located in the area are also planning to implement a voluntary blood donation program to supplement the blood supply for the provincial General Hospital.
Mr. Ho Sy Quoc - Chairman of Formosa Ha Tinh Trade Union said: "After learning that the provincial General Hospital is facing a shortage of blood, as a unit with a large number of union members, we have coordinated with the provincial General Hospital to develop a program and call on union members to participate in voluntary blood donation. Currently, preparations for the blood donation festival are being urgently completed, expected to be deployed on Saturday (July 19). Hopefully, the program will collect a relatively large amount of blood to help the provincial General Hospital and medical facilities in the area have more blood for emergency and treatment of patients."
According to Master Hoang Quoc Anh - Deputy Head of the Department of Hematology - Blood Transfusion, although up to now, with the participation of mass organizations and the response of many individuals, the amount of blood in the reserve has been supplemented. However, with an average daily usage of 40 - 50 units of blood for emergency and surgery, the Provincial General Hospital and other medical facilities in the whole province are still facing the risk of blood shortage. We hope to continue to receive the response of all people in voluntary blood donation. On the side of the communes and wards, after stably operating the 2-level local government model, soon complete the steering committee, build and launch voluntary blood donation campaigns according to the plan of the Provincial Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign Steering Committee.

Faced with the risk of blood shortage, affecting the emergency and treatment work of medical facilities, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Duong Tat Thang - Head of the Provincial Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committee signed a document requesting member agencies of the Steering Committee according to their functions and tasks to continue to propagate and mobilize cadres, civil servants, public employees and workers to donate blood voluntarily to ensure the set targets.
The Department of Health directs the Provincial General Hospital, hospitals/medical centers to proactively coordinate with agencies, units, localities, enterprises... to promote propaganda, mobilize voluntary blood donation and coordinate to organize centralized blood donation, inter-commune or at medical facilities. Organize blood collection points at the Provincial General Hospital and promote propaganda, mobilization, creating favorable conditions for people to participate in voluntary blood donation.
The People's Committees of communes and wards establish steering committees for voluntary blood donation in the locality to promptly direct voluntary blood donation activities in accordance with regulations and practical situations. Develop plans and organize voluntary blood donation activities in a centralized, inter-commune manner or mobilize people to proactively go to medical facilities to donate blood to ensure assigned targets. Step up propaganda and mobilization of cadres, civil servants, public employees, workers and people to participate in voluntary blood donation.
