Heartbreaking for children orphaned early because their parents died of cancer

Vi Quoc Viet (2009), a Nung ethnic, is currently a 10th grade student at Hiep Hoa High School No. 3. Currently, Quoc Viet lives with his father and sister in Hop Thinh commune, Bac Ninh province (formerly Bac Giang province).

Previously, Viet's mother was the main breadwinner in the family, working as a scrap sorter to support the family. However, in 2020, she was diagnosed with liver cancer and her health rapidly declined. In December 2024, her mother passed away, leaving a great loss for the family. Her father, Vi Van An (born 1972), is currently in poor health, mentally unstable, and often has headaches and aching limbs due to arthritis.

Orphaned by liver cancer, Quoc Viet always tries hard to study with the dream of working in the information technology industry to help his family.

The family has a field of rice, and they grow two crops a year to earn a living. However, because the field is located near the Cau River, during the flood season, the rice is often flooded, and the crops are almost lost. To earn more money to make ends meet, An, despite his poor health, still tries to endure the pain and work as a bricklayer. Despite his best efforts, he can only work about 15-16 days a month. There are months when the pain recurs continuously, and he can only work a few days, earning a mere 250,000 VND a day.

Currently, the father and his three sons have no place to live and are asking to build a temporary house on their uncle's land. Because of trying to work and overwork, An's health, which was already weak, has deteriorated further. The burden of making a living for the family has made An even more miserable.

Viet’s family is poor, so he is exempted from tuition fees and receives 640,000 VND from the school each semester. Viet’s older sister, Vi Hai Anh (2007), is currently in grade 12 at Hiep Hoa High School No. 6. Both sisters are very studious, always cherishing the dream of completing their education so that they can take care of their father in the future, not letting him work hard when his body is sick.

When their mother was still alive, the two Viet sisters often followed their mother to sort scrap or help their father with farming, planting rice, and weeding. Quoc Viet shared that he really wanted to continue studying and especially loved the information technology industry, but thinking about his family's circumstances, he did not dare to dream too far. Currently, the only thing he wishes for is to go to school every day, his family is always healthy and his sister can fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher.

Feeling sorry for the character's situation, actress Phuong Oanh hugged Viet to encourage him. The image of the father, despite his illness, still trying to go to work to earn money to support his children made the actress choke up. She shared that she could not hold back her emotions when she saw An, Viet's father, only in his 50s, with gray hair, a haggard face and older than his age due to the burden of the family. Phuong Oanh hopes that An will take care of his health to continue to be a strong spiritual support, helping his two children study with peace of mind and pursue their dreams.

“Through what Viet shared, I feel that he always tries his best every day to make his parents feel at ease. I hope he will keep his faith in the future, continue to strive for success and repay his father. At the same time, I hope Viet will think more openly, do not blame himself for not having time to repay his mother before she passed away. You are still young, knowing how to help your mother with farming, cooking, cleaning the house, that is already very good. I believe that your mother does not want her children to feel remorse, but only wants you to live well, live happily so that she can feel at ease,” Phuong Oanh shared with tears in her eyes.

Words of encouragement were sent to Quoc Viet and his father, giving the family more strength to move forward in the future.

MC Duong Hong Phuc also expressed his concern for An's health as he had to shoulder everything alone after his wife's passing. The male MC sent words of encouragement and motivation for An to stay strong and try to live a healthy life to be a solid support for his children to study with peace of mind.

In response to the character's sharing, singer Hoang Ton not only encouraged but also told Viet to think more positively. He said: "You must understand that the best way to repay your mother is to live well and happily. Don't keep blaming yourself for not being able to repay your mother, but try to make her feel at ease, as well as try to make your father less tired in the future."

Similar to Quoc Viet, Nguyen Danh Tuan (2009), a 10th grade student at Vo Nhai High School, also lost his loved one to the terrible disease of cancer. Tuan's father passed away in 2023 after a long battle with liver cancer.

Currently, Tuan lives with his grandfather, mother and brother in Trang Xa commune, Thai Nguyen province. The family is poor, the house is seriously degraded and dilapidated. The wooden house was built a long time ago and has not been repaired yet.

Tuan’s grandfather, Nguyen Danh Hoi, is old and has dementia. He lives in a private house opposite Tuan’s family, so every day the whole family goes back and forth to take care of him and prepare meals for him. Currently, the family has no bathroom or toilet and has to share the kitchen with the grandfather’s house, making life even more difficult.

Tuan's mother, Nguyen Thi Toan (born 1979), is suffering from a benign uterine leiomyoma and a tumor in the neck area. Ms. Toan had just had surgery for the tumor in her neck not long ago, so her health is still weak. In the past, Ms. Toan was a farmer, growing tea, rice and corn, but the yield was not high, often not enough to eat. Now her health is not good, the family's situation is even more difficult.

Tuan is understanding, always tries to study and help his mother.

Nguyen Danh Hoang (2005) – Tuan’s older brother is currently studying at university in Thai Nguyen. Hoang is both studying and working part-time to save money for tuition. Hoang wants to finish school soon to go to work to earn money and take over the family from his father.

As for Tuan, he has to travel a long distance to get to school every day. Every morning, Tuan cycles about 2 km, then takes the bus to get to school on time. His monthly bus fare is about 450,000 VND – a considerable amount given his family’s current circumstances.

Aware of the hardships of his mother and brother, Tuan always tries to save as much as possible. He eats breakfast at home, prepares his own lunch at school, and then studies until the afternoon before returning home. Despite his busy schedule, after school, Tuan still tries to go to the fields to help his mother with work, sharing some of the burden of making a living.

With a good academic record, Tuan always cherished the dream of continuing his studies at university and becoming a construction engineer in the future. Although he knew that the road ahead would be full of challenges, his determined eyes still exuded a desire to overcome his fate, determined to reach his dream so that he could replace his father and support his family.

At the studio, the image of Tuan and his mother, emaciated, made many people choke up.

Singer Hoang Ton expressed his admiration for Tuan's understanding when he helps his mother with housework, farming, cooking, cleaning but does not forget to study. He hopes Toan will take care of her health so that the children will have a solid spiritual support in the future.

Phuong Oanh sympathizes and emotionally recalls the time when her family encountered an unexpected incident.

At the studio, actress Phuong Oanh could not hold back her tears when witnessing the children’s situation. She expressed deep sympathy for their thoughts, always wishing to grow up quickly to be able to take care of their families.

“I have been following and know that Vietnamese Family Home is a meaningful program, a place to listen, share and support those in especially difficult circumstances. Before coming here, I had prepared myself mentally, with 'nerves of steel' to participate in the program, but when I witnessed with my own eyes what the characters went through, I could no longer hold back my emotions. I myself feel very heartbroken by the suffering of the families. Especially the mature and understanding thoughts of the children make me even more heartbroken,” Phuong Oanh said.

The actress said that she was born into a well-off family, but suddenly encountered an incident that caused the whole family to fall into a difficult and arduous time. However, her parents never complained or moaned in front of their children. Phuong Oanh shared that she always felt the pressure on her parents' shoulders, even though they did not say it out loud.

At that time, Phuong Oanh was the same age as the children in the program, so she understood the feeling when the family suddenly fell into decline, continuously facing changes and difficulties both materially and mentally.

Phuong Oanh shared: “During those days, I witnessed my parents’ mental decline. Every morning when I woke up, the only thing I wished for was for my family to be safe and my parents to be healthy. I always wished that I would grow up quickly so that I could work and earn money to help my parents. I used to dream of having money to buy milk for my parents to drink, so that they would have enough nutrition to overcome that difficult period. More than anyone else, I understand the feeling of helplessness of the children in the program when they are too young, not old enough to work, but already cherish the desire to grow up quickly to support their families.”

Phuong Oanh recalls the memories of her family's upheaval, understanding the helplessness of children who have to grow up too soon.

The actress of “The Taste of Love” said that it was the unexpected incident that trained her strong will and urged her to rise up. “I think that will is the premise for me to strive every day throughout my youth. Thanks to that, today I have achieved a little success, not only helping my family but also being able to share with society and other difficult circumstances. I am grateful for the incidents that have trained me to become a brave, steadfast and strong person. Since childhood, I have always believed that no matter how difficult it is, I must keep faith in life, live honestly so that one day I can help my family and those around me. I hope that children will also have that motivation, strive to rise up and overcome their own adversities,” Phuong Oanh expressed.

Watch the program Vietnamese Family Warmth broadcast at 20:20 every Friday on HTV7 channel. The program is produced by Bee Media Company in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City Television, with the support of Hoa Sen Home Construction Materials & Interior Supermarket System ( Hoa Sen Group ) and Hoa Sen Plastic Pipe - Source of Happiness.
