The highest score (median score) achieved by candidates in literature this year is 7.25; lower than in 2014 (8 points) and higher than in 2023 (7 points).
There are many reasons for not getting a 10 in literature in this year's high school graduation exam.

First of all, because this is the year of the literature exam according to the new program, the structure and requirements of the exam are in the direction of innovation. The reading comprehension text, integrated with the requirement to write paragraphs and social argumentative essays are texts outside the program, not in the textbook. This can cause more difficulties for candidates when doing the test. Candidates have to spend a lot of time reading and understanding the text, while the time remains unchanged (120 minutes), so it is difficult for the writing to fully develop the idea, and it is difficult for candidates to write long. In fact, from the previous essays that achieved 10 points because they fully developed the idea, and were well written. Candidates who want to get creative points are not easy because they do not dare to put much into the essay due to the length control, not enough time to write.
Second, the exam questions are related to the new curriculum's literary knowledge concepts that, if not mastered, students may forget or answer incorrectly. These are "narrator's point of view", "the role of details in expressing the content of a text", comparison skills (in the reading comprehension section); writing a paragraph analyzing an aspect of a story (in the paragraph writing section)... The disadvantage of students taking the high school graduation exam in literature this year (and the next 2 years) is that they have only studied the new curriculum for 3 years of high school while many new literary knowledge concepts have been taught very thoroughly in middle school.
Third reason, the answer sheet has many surprising requirements, such as questions 3, 4, 5 of reading comprehension; question 2 of writing (too detailed, with many ideas, candidates can hardly meet all of them). Although the answer sheet is open-ended, the examiner must still be cautious and not dare to risk giving a perfect score.
Finally, we must mention the psychological factor of the examiner. It is much more difficult for examiners to grade papers according to the new program than the old program. The leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training and the grading councils have also requested and encouraged teachers to grade papers impartially, in accordance with the spirit of the answers, including the requirement of flexibility and open grading... But how open and to what extent to give a perfect score is still really difficult. With the old program, Ms. Mi (in To Hoai's A Phu's Wife ) could appear similar in the students' papers, but with the new program, there are many different forms of actual papers. This could prevent examiners from boldly proposing a paper that is worth 10 points. Those could be the reasons why this year's exam lacked a 10-point paper in literature.
