On July 25, Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Hoang Ha - Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, said that he had just performed a successful endoscopic surgery for a male patient suffering from two types of malignant gastrointestinal cancers at the same time.
"This is a special case of simultaneous diagnosis of rectal and colon cancer - a rare situation with a rate of only about 2-5% in colorectal cancer," Associate Professor Ha informed.
Previously, a 66-year-old male patient in Ninh Binh came to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital for examination with the following symptoms: Bowel disorders, constant urge to defecate, bloody stools, mucus in stools, and rapid weight loss within the past 3 months.
With typical symptoms of digestive diseases, patients are given in-depth examination to assess their general condition.

"The colonoscopy results detected a large tumor in the rectum, about 10cm from the anus, and a second tumor in the right colon, about 2cm smaller," Associate Professor Ha said.
After specialist consultation, the patient was indicated for laparoscopic surgery to resect the colon and rectum containing the tumor and remove all metastatic lymph nodes in the abdomen. After the surgery, the doctors completely removed the tumor, preserving function and helping the patient recover quickly.

Associate Professor Ha recommends that if people see any changes in bowel habits, bloody stools, mucus in stools, unexplained weight loss , risk factors such as colon polyps, ulcerative colitis, family history of colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal cancer in general... they should absolutely not be subjective, but need to monitor their health periodically and screen their digestive tract periodically.
Regular screening with colonoscopy every year is an effective measure to detect and completely treat colorectal cancer early.
The American Cancer Society recommends the following for people at average risk of colorectal cancer:
- Men and women should start regular screening at age 45.
- People in good health should continue regular colorectal cancer screening until age 75.
