Thai university allows students to take time off due to menstrual problems

AFP reported on November 15 that Thammasat University in Pathum Thani province, north of the Thai capital Bangkok, will allow students experiencing problems such as stomachaches, headaches and fatigue due to menstruation to take time off without affecting their grades.

The decision was approved by the school's education department last week, making Thammasat the first educational institution in Thailand to have such a policy.

"The Department of Academic Affairs would like to request cooperation from faculties, institutes and member schools to allow students to take time off due to menstrual issues," Thamasat University's student union said in a statement on social network X (formerly Twitter) on November 14.

However, the statement did not mention how long students could be out of school.

Thammasat University - Thailand's second oldest university and considered one of the most progressive - is renowned domestically for its courses in politics and law.

A handful of countries around the world have enacted laws allowing female workers to take time off during menstruation, including Japan, Indonesia and Spain.

In some other countries, employers have begun to give employees the option to stay home in this situation, even though there is no legal obligation to do so.
