Last week, Mr Putin warned that Russia could use nuclear weapons if it was attacked with missiles, and that Moscow would view any attack, supported by a nuclear power, as a joint attack on Russia.

Mr Putin's warning comes as the US and its allies weigh whether to let Ukraine use Western weapons to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.

On September 30, Reuters news agency quoted Mr. Stoltenberg as saying: "Every time we increase our support with new weapons - tanks, long-range firepower or F-16 fighter jets - Russia tries to stop us."

According to the outgoing NATO Secretary General, this effort by Moscow will "not prevent allies of the military alliance from supporting Kiev".

A day earlier, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also emphasized the view that long-range weapons play an important role for Ukraine, especially to "overcome the mine belt in the East".

Asked whether Berlin should do something different in the future, Foreign Minister Baerbock said she had made her personal opinion clear, but German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had a different view.

Unable to agree, the German government did not support a proposal to supply long-range weapons to Ukraine, a step that the US, UK and France could take.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the situation on the front lines of the more than 2.5-year war with Russia is very difficult and the armed forces of this Eastern European country are having to make every effort this fall.

Speaking via video after a more than two-hour meeting with senior commanders, Mr Zelensky said: "Based on reports on each frontline area, current and future capabilities and specific tasks, the situation is very, very difficult."

"Everything that can be done this fall, everything that we can achieve, must be achieved," the leader stressed.
