The results were announced after several post-election polls showed the opposition likely to win, according to Reuters. Gonzalez had earlier said there was reason to celebrate and urged supporters to continue watching the vote count.

"The results cannot be hidden. The country has chosen peaceful change," Mr. Gonzalez wrote on social network X shortly before the results were announced by the National Electoral Council.

Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado called on the military to "stand on the right side of history". "You have one chance and that time is now," Ms Machado wrote.

Nicolas Maduro (62 years old) took office as president of Venezuela in 2013 and was re-elected in the 2018 election. The latest results will help him maintain his position in power for another 6-year term.
