How is President Trump supported in his first month back in the White House?

More than half of Americans surveyed said they approve of what President Donald Trump has done in the first month of his second term, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll released on February 9.

The poll, conducted from February 5-7, found that President Donald Trump had a 53% approval rating in his first month in office. A total of 2,175 Americans participated in the survey, with a margin of error of 2.5%.

However, many expressed concern that Mr. Trump has not done enough to reduce high consumer prices, and most people oppose tariffs aimed at Mexico, Canada and Europe, according to CBS.

Specifically, 66% of survey respondents felt that the Trump administration has not really focused on the goal of lowering consumer prices. Of these, nearly 50% are Republicans.

While 56% of respondents supported a 10% tariff on China, the same number opposed plans to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and, in the future, on European countries.

Half of those surveyed also said that billionaire Elon Musk and the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) he leads should have a lot or at least some influence over the operations and spending of the US government, a number that rose to 74% among Republicans.

US presidents tend to enjoy high approval ratings when they first take office. For example, former President Joe Biden had a 57% approval rating at the start of his term in February; Barack Obama had a 66% approval rating in January 2009; and George W. Bush had a 59% approval rating in February 2001.

Over time, this ratio will change based on the president's performance during his term.
