US court sets trial date for Donald Trump

On July 21, Federal Magistrate Judge Aileen Cannon announced that the trial of former President Donald Trump is scheduled to begin on May 20, 2024, right at the height of the US presidential campaign.

Judge Cannon explained that she chose the May date to give both sides time to process more than 1.1 million pages of evidence and resolve related issues.

According to The Hill, prosecutors previously proposed holding a trial in December, while Donald Trump's defense lawyers proposed holding the trial after the November 2024 election.

Donald Trump, 77, is the first former US president to face criminal charges and is currently the leading Republican presidential candidate. The trial is expected to begin near the end of the primary campaign to choose the party's candidate.
