Organizing humanitarian surgery program for disabled children in difficult circumstances - Cao Bang Electronic Newspaper

From July 6 to 11, Center II, Vietnam Association for the Relief of Disabled Children, in collaboration with domestic and foreign organizations, organized a humanitarian surgery program for disabled children in difficult circumstances in Cao Bang and Thai Nguyen provinces (formerly Bac Kan province).

The subjects of examination and screening are children under 18 years old with difficult circumstances, congenital facial malformations (cleft lip, cleft palate), contracted burn scars, traumatic sequelae, motor malformations, after being examined and screened, surgery is indicated. After consultation and testing, if eligible, surgery will be performed.

Estimated number of surgeries: 115 - 135 patients, of which about 60 patients will be operated on at the Provincial General Hospital and about 70 patients will be operated on at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital.

Specific time: July 6 (Sunday): Reception, guidance, patient records and screening; July 7 (Monday): Medical screening, testing, finalizing surgical indications. July 8-10: Perform surgery according to disease groups, prioritizing complicated cases; July 11 : Post-operative monitoring, rehabilitation consultation, discharge instructions.

Regarding surgical personnel, the program mobilized more than 60 doctors, nurses, and technicians from the following units: Operation Smile Vietnam, 108 Military Central Hospital, Thai Nguyen Central Hospital, Provincial General Hospital, and domestic and international volunteer doctors. In particular, the team of doctors specializing in maxillofacial plastic surgery, anesthesia and resuscitation, dentistry, pediatric orthopedics, and rehabilitation was strengthened to handle highly complex cases.

The program was implemented by Center II in collaboration with Operation Smile Vietnam, the Provincial General Hospital, and Thai Nguyen Central Hospital. The Vietnam Children's Fund and several sponsoring organizations have accompanied and supported the entire cost of surgery, accommodation, travel, and post-operative care for the families.

Participants in the program not only receive free surgery but also receive nutritional, psychological, medical and rehabilitation support to help them quickly reintegrate into the community.
