On July 3, according to Al Jazeera news agency, in the capital Kiev, during a meeting with the Ukrainian leader, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider promoting an early ceasefire in the conflict with Russia.

The visit comes after Hungary assumed the rotating presidency of the European Union with a promise to “make Europe great again”. The position gives the central European country major influence over the bloc’s agenda and priorities for the next six months.

The visit came as a surprise to many because Prime Minister Viktor Orban is Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest ally among EU leaders and has frequently opposed EU initiatives to support Ukraine.

The two leaders discussed peace plans and opportunities for negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as well as current issues in bilateral relations. President Zelensky called on Mr. Orban to support Kiev’s peace efforts. According to Mr. Zelensky, Kiev is preparing for a second international peace conference, similar to the one held in Switzerland last month.
