Reuters news agency quoted a German government spokesman as saying that during the phone call, Chancellor Scholz called on President Putin to end the special military campaign in Ukraine and withdraw troops from this Eastern European country.

Stressing that Berlin would continue to support Kiev as long as necessary, Mr. Scholz also told President Putin that Russia should be ready for negotiations with Ukraine to serve the purpose of achieving a just and lasting peace .

Earlier, the German Chancellor had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and will contact him again after finishing the phone call with President Putin.

This is the first phone call between the German and Russian leaders in nearly two years. The last phone call between Chancellor Scholz and President Putin took place in December 2022.

On the Russian side, the Kremlin said that President Putin shared with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz the conditions for an agreement to end the potential conflict with Ukraine.

In a statement on the phone call, the Kremlin said: "The agreements that can be reached must take into account the security interests of the Russian Federation, proceed from the new territorial realities and, most importantly, address the root causes of the conflict."

Meanwhile, Ukraine on the same day criticized the phone call as an "attempt to appease" that did not promote peace efforts, three years after Russia launched a military campaign in Ukraine.

"What is needed are concrete, strong actions that will force Mr. Putin to move toward peace, not persuasion and attempts at appeasement, which he sees as a sign of weakness and exploits to his advantage," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
