Oracle founder Larry Ellison has overtaken Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to become the second richest person in the world .
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as of July 17, Mr. Ellison's fortune has increased by more than $60 billion this year, bringing his total net worth to $257 billion, surpassing Mr. Zuckerberg's $247 billion.
The change in rankings follows a surge in Oracle shares this summer that helped Mr. Ellison’s fortune increase by more than $40 billion in just three days in mid-June 2025. Mr. Ellison, who founded Oracle in 1977 and served as CEO for 37 years, now owns about 40% of the software company.
Earlier this week, Oracle also announced plans to invest $3 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure in Germany and the Netherlands over the next five years.
The move is part of the company's push into artificial intelligence, which includes involvement in President Trump's Stargate project.
Like many billionaires, Ellison has faced some criticism for how he uses his wealth, including his ownership of 98% of the Hawaiian island of Lānaʻi. In 2010, Ellison signed the “Giving Pledge,” an initiative by billionaires Bill Gates, Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett, pledging to give away the majority of his wealth to philanthropic causes during his lifetime.
Other tech leaders also dominate the list of the world's 10 richest people. Elon Musk retains his lead by more than $100 billion, despite posting a $66.9 billion loss this year.
Mr Ellison is followed by Mr Zuckerberg in second place, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in fourth place, and former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in fifth place. All four have seen their fortunes increase significantly amid the current AI boom.
Completing the top 10 list are Alphabet founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Louis Vuitton SE CEO Bernard Arnault, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Berkshire Hathaway CEO and investor Warren Buffett./.
