According to Hindustan Times, the Wall Street Journal reported on July 16 that a recording of the cockpit conversation between the two pilots of the Air India flight that crashed last month showed that the captain was the one who turned off the fuel control switch.
The report said that first officer Clive Kunder of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner asked Captain Sumeet Sabharwal why the fuel switch was switched from the "on" to "off" position just seconds after the plane took off from the runway.

"The first officer appeared surprised to see the fuel switch turned off, then panicked. The captain appeared to remain calm, according to the report," the Wall Street Journal quoted a source familiar with the initial assessment of US officials.
However, the Airline Pilots Association of India has rejected the theory that "human impact was the cause of the accident".
On June 12, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with flight number AI171 carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, crashed into a dormitory of a medical school near Ahmedabad airport shortly after takeoff and caught fire. The accident killed 241 people on board and 19 people on the ground.
On July 12, the AAIB announced the preliminary results of the investigation into the AI171 plane crash in India.
The results showed that 3 seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad (India) on June 12, the fuel supply to both engines of the Air India Boeing 787 was cut off. The fan speed of the engines began to decrease and the plane gradually lost altitude. 9 seconds later, the pilot sent an emergency signal "Mayday" and the plane crashed into a dormitory of a medical school.
