Through the Khan Academy Vietnam (KAV) program, The Vietnam Foundation (VNF) is taking practical actions to contribute to the development of an artificial intelligence application strategy ineducation according to the Government's direction.

Consensus on AI application strategy in teaching and learning: Teachers take the pioneering role

Recently, at a meeting between representatives of Khan Academy USA, The Vietnam Foundation team and Dr. Nguyen Son Hai, Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Information, Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Educational Technology and Digital Human Resources - to discuss the role and strategy of applying AI in education. At the meeting, Dr. Nguyen Son Hai emphasized his impression of what Khan Academy and Khanmigo are implementing. Dr. Hai said: “We know a lot about Khan Academy as well as Khanmigo and are very impressed with what Khan Academy Vietnam is implementing in the context of strong AI development. The Vietnamese government is taking drastic actions on artificial intelligence, and the education sector is also strongly promoting at the policy level, so that the application of AI in education is effective while still maintaining the educational identity - especially the ethical, academic, and responsible use factors.”

At the discussion, Dr. Hai said that artificial intelligence is a powerful support tool but cannot replace humans. In particular, teachers need to be pioneers in mastering AI, controlling learners' use of AI and taking advantage of this technology to innovate teaching methods and student assessment. Dr. Hai said: "When GenAI develops, we see this as a very important factor that can even shape the activities of each field in the coming time, including education. This is a great concern of the leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training and we have instructed the departments in the Ministry to urgently grasp and have appropriate policies to guide the effective use of AI. In parallel with the draft strategy, the Ministry implements specific viewpoints: Artificial intelligence is a tool, it cannot replace humans; Teachers and managers need to be pioneers in mastering AI, controlling learners using AI; Using AI must have special responsibility for high school students, avoiding the consequences caused by AI."

This view is also affirmed by Ms. Emily Goldman, Director of Strategy and Operations of Khan Academy International in the US: "We completely agree that: if teachers understand technology, they can use it effectively. On the contrary, if they do not understand, it is very difficult for technology to be used properly for real learning. We designed Khanmigo with the philosophy that in order for teachers to do their most important job - inspiring and leading students to learn, they need to be relieved of administrative and technical tasks. Khanmigo was created to support teachers, not replace them. For students, Khanmigo acts as a tutor - not giving answers, but suggesting thoughts and guiding each step. In particular, Khanmigo has the ability to detect sensitive or age-inappropriate content for students, and has a timely warning mechanism for teachers and parents to support and monitor their learning process."

As a parent who has experienced Khanmigo, Mr. Kieu Huy Hoa - Director of the KAV program gave evidence, “Khanmigo is programmed to detect and remind students when they ask questions that are morally incorrect or age-inappropriate. The system allows parents and teachers to review the entire conversation history between students and AI, helping to closely monitor students' psychology, cognition and learning behavior. For example, if students look up sensitive content such as sex, violence or potential dangers, the system will trigger a warning to parents or teachers, creating an opportunity for timely intervention, advice and guidance.”

At the same time, in sharing about AI application strategy, Dr. Hai also paid special attention to the need for teachers to be trained in proper AI capacity to be able to use AI in their profession, organize experiments, design learning projects, and at the same time control students' AI learning well. "If the teaching staff is equipped with good AI capacity, the ethical and responsible use of AI will be improved and human rights will be guaranteed. We want a safe, healthy AI ecosystem applied to education, and this requires the support of both domestic and foreign enterprises," Dr. Hai concluded.

At the end of the discussion, representatives of all parties agreed that enhancing AI capacity for teachers is a top priority, because the creativity and appeal of AI will help teachers learn and develop quickly. The goal is to equip teachers with the ability to master AI, use it responsibly, ensure AI ethics and protect the rights of learners, especially high school students.

VNF and Khan Academy USA gradually put AI strategy into practice in education

In the Resolutions on educational innovation issued by the Government, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in education emphasizes important pillars such as: Teachers are the pioneers in grasping, using and guiding AI; Learners need to approach AI responsibly and with direction; AI application must contribute to improving the quality, efficiency and equity of education... In reality, through the KAV program, The Vietnam Foundation is gradually concretizing these strategies with practical activities.

Since 2023, VNF has localized the course "AI in education" - an online course, completely free of charge, to help teachers easily access basic knowledge about AI and effectively apply it to teaching. As of June 2025, nearly 4,000 teachers in Quang Tri and teachers in all provinces and cities across the country have completed the course "AI in education". This is a practical action to meet the task of improving teachers' capacity to apply AI, helping teachers approach AI in an easy-to-understand and easy-to-apply way.

At the same time, The Vietnam Foundation is promoting the introduction of Khanmigo to Vietnam in 2025, with the desire to build an AI learning ecosystem to support teachers in preparing lessons and evaluating students, while students have tutors for personalized learning. This helps to concretize the goal of forming AI tools to support classroom management, learning data analysis, and personalized learning in accordance with the Government's direction. In fact, to operate an AI tool like Khanmigo, Khan Academy USA still has to pay many types of costs to major technology partners such as development fees, algorithm fees, system maintenance fees, and upgrade fees to optimize for users in each country. However, for countries that show high readiness and have real needs for use, Khan Academy is ready to support. Vietnam is one of the priority countries, thanks to the attention from the Ministry of Education and the initiative of the teaching staff in accessing technology. If the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training makes an official request, Khan Academy will negotiate further with technology partners to completely waive usage fees and dedicate additional resources to support implementation in Vietnam.

In addition, in the coming time, VNF will actively coordinate with Khan Academy USA as well as domestic educational institutions to organize training programs and seminars specifically for teachers. Representative of The Vietnam Foundation - Mr. Pham Duc Trung Kien emphasized: " AI is just a tool - not a replacement for humans, but a tool for teachers to improve work efficiency, create more humane and safer learning experiences."

Thus, Dr. Hai shares the same view with VNF in placing the role of teachers at the center, while developing a sustainable AI ecosystem for Vietnamese education, which is being realized through specific actions both in the short term (through AI courses in education on the Khan Academy platform, workshops for teachers), and in the long term (Khammigo application, learning data analysis, development of digital learning support tools).

Dr. Hai shared: “Vietnam is showing strong determination in developing AI by issuing a National Strategy on the application of artificial intelligence in education until 2030 - this is a long-term strategy, not just an action plan. In particular, the Ministry of Education and Training is particularly interested in applying AI in teaching and learning, while promoting research, development and training of AI human resources for the education sector. The Department of Science, Technology and Information will continue to closely coordinate with pioneering organizations such as The Vietnam Foundation to realize these contents, from popularizing foundation courses for teachers to deploying tools such as Khanmigo for direct teaching and learning at schools.”

It can be seen that the synchronous deployment of the Khan Academy online learning platform and the Khanmigo AI tool in Vietnam is not only a big step forward in digital transformation of education, but also has special significance on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States. Through the support of Khan Academy and its representative in Vietnam, The Vietnam Foundation, Vietnamese students and teachers are gradually approaching the best of American education: free, personalized, and equal-humane learning.
