To give students shade to study and play, teachers at an elementary school in Bien Hoa ( Dong Nai ) contributed money to build a roof covering the entire school yard.
Nguyen Chi Thanh Primary School is located in an alley on Bui Van Hoa Street, KP.7, Long Binh Ward, Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province. The school was established in 1995, when it was still a red dirt village school. Three years ago, the 3 old classrooms were degraded and could not meet modern teaching needs, so the school built new ones. In 2023, to meet the increasing student demand, the school continued to rebuild 2 new classrooms. To have a construction site, the school had to cut down many trees that had been attached to the school for decades, although the school board, teachers, staff and students were very regretful.
Students live in a school yard with a sunshade from the "Small Plan for School Yard Mesh Roof" movement with financial support from teachers.
The completed school is very spacious, modern, and has a larger playground… That is a great joy for teachers and students. However, the school yard lacks shade for students to study, live, and play.
The school yard is spacious but students do not have time to play after school. During physical education classes, especially in periods 3 and 4 in the morning and periods 2 and 3 in the afternoon, students hide under small, shady areas to study, which affects their health. Experiential activities are very difficult because of the sun and lack of shade in the yard.
Faced with these difficulties and obstacles, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Principal of Nguyen Chi Thanh Primary School, struggled to come up with many plans and designs to create shade in the school yard as a meaningful gift for students. So he discussed with teachers to launch the "Small Plan for School Yard Net Roofs" movement, students will collect beer cans, soft drink cans, scrap paper... and submit them to the Team Leader. The amount of money sold after 2 collections was less than 20 million VND. The estimated budget was 180 million VND, which was nothing compared to the above amount. The project seemed to be abandoned.
Students no longer have to worry about doing physical education in the school yard because there is a roof.
To overcome the difficulties, with the spirit of solidarity "working together", each cadre, teacher, and employee of the school joined hands to contribute the entire amount of money to build a "Schoolyard Net Roof". The net roof covers the classroom block (18 rooms) built 3 years ago and the new classroom block (12 rooms) was handed over in November 2024.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu, currently the homeroom teacher of class 5/3, and also a teacher working at the school in the early years of its establishment, shared: "This is one of the first schools in Bien Hoa City whose schoolyard is covered with a cool roof. When the project was completed, the joy of teachers and students was indescribable. Seeing the children studying and playing in the schoolyard with a comfortable, cool roof, I felt extremely happy."
