On July 14, the SAGI Summer School 2025 (3S25) officially opened at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science andEducation (ICISE, Quy Nhon Nam Ward, Gia Lai Province). The event was organized by the Vietnam Science Association in collaboration with the ICISE Center, bringing together nearly 40 scientists, engineers, researchers and students from 5 countries, taking place over two weeks.

While the first two years focused on observational astronomy, this year the SAGI Summer School shifted its focus to the practical field of developing applied instruments in astrophysics. This is an interdisciplinary field that requires a combination of engineering, analytical thinking and the ability to integrate knowledge from many different fields.
The training program is rigorously designed, including specialized topics in optics, electronics, measurement techniques and scientific instrument control. Students also directly practice contents such as Python control programming, cosmic ray detection and basic radio astronomy techniques.
Each day of the summer school, theory is taught in the morning and laboratory practice is given in the afternoon. Topics include signal processing, imaging systems, Fourier transforms, as well as experiments on electronic devices, radio transmission and reception systems, and astral particle detection.
In particular, in the second week, students will participate in 12 “Project Lab” sessions, working in groups to develop integrated projects and presenting the results at the closing ceremony. This is an opportunity for students to comprehensively apply their knowledge, develop their collaboration, problem-solving and critical thinking skills – essential skills for modern scientists.
The professional quality of the summer school is guaranteed by a team of international lecturers from the world's leading research centers and universities such as NASA/JPL (USA), Caltech, Stanford University, University of California - Berkeley, CEA Saclay (France), Czech Technical University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam-Germany University... Among them, there are many prestigious Vietnamese scientists such as Dr. Nguyen Trong Hien (NASA/JPL), Dr. Nguyen Luong Quang (CEA Saclay), Dr. Han Huy Dung, Dr. Cao Van Son...
According to Dr. Tran Thanh Son – Deputy Director of ICISE Center, SAGI Summer School is not only a short-term training course, but also an academic environment that inspires and comprehensively develops young people. Every year, the summer school contributes to forming a closely-knit academic community, promoting passion for research, manufacturing and scientific and technological innovation.

“This is also part of the long-term strategy of the SAGI research group (under the IFIRSE Institute, ICISE Center), aiming to contribute to the development of high-quality human resources for the Vietnamese astrophysics industry - a field that is being assessed as having potential in the era of space conquest and innovation”, Dr. Tran Thanh Son shared.
Established in 2022, in Quy Nhon, Binh Dinh (now Gia Lai province) with funding from the Simons Foundation (USA) and led by prestigious scientists, the SAGI group is gradually becoming a nucleus connecting interdisciplinary science, creating a serious research playground for young Vietnamese people. Through activities such as summer schools, scientific seminars, international cooperation, the group hopes to build a strong astronomy community, integrate internationally and make practical contributions to the development of space science in the country in the future. |
