In 32,000 hectares of aquaculture, the province's shrimp farming area accounts for nearly 25%, this is a strong farming subject with high economic value. However, with the trend of many shrimp farming areas in the province gradually narrowing the area to serve socio-economic development tasks, the innovation of technical solutions to increase output and efficiency of farming area is of interest to the agricultural sector.
Tien Yen district is one of the 9 coastal localities of the province with many advantages in developing aquaculture. The district has identified the development of agriculture, forestry and fishery as the foundation for socio-economic development, improving the quality of people's lives, in which livestock is identified as the main industry, aquaculture is the spearhead economic sector with the policy of developing "two animals, one tree" including chicken, shrimp and medicinal plants.
Tien Yen district has 10 communes, of which 5 are coastal communes with advantages in aquaculture development, including: Hai Lang, Tien Lang, Dong Rui, Dong Ngu. In 2024, the district's aquaculture area will reach over 1,560 hectares, of which shrimp farming area accounts for 1,374 hectares. Promoting the advantage of this key subject, the infrastructure of the concentrated aquaculture area in Hai Lang commune invested from the provincial and district budget has created conditions for people in the area to exploit the advantages of economic development. Farmers proactively innovate technology to improve farming efficiency, especially in the winter crop.
Mr. Dang Van Dung (Binh Minh village, Hai Lang commune, Tien Yen district) said: In the winter crop every year, the North is very scarce in terms of goods. Grasping that condition, the unit has invested in 10 tarpaulin ponds, each pond has an area of 500m2. to raise shrimp indoors and catch the highest price of the year. The ideal temperature for raising whiteleg shrimp is 25-30 degrees Celsius, while this season the outdoor temperature is usually 12-20 degrees Celsius and there are times when the temperature drops lower, so if raising ponds outdoors it is very difficult, shrimp grow slowly. Therefore, when investing in a covered tarpaulin pond, the unit actively controls the temperature in the pond. Currently, the shrimp are 75 days old, it is expected that in 20 days, there will be about 30-40 shrimp/kg and they will be harvested. The expected harvest output is 25-30 tons.
In 2024, the value of the fishery industry in Tien Yen district will account for more than 50% of the total value of agriculture, forestry and fishery in the district. At the end of the year, the total output of aquaculture in the district will reach over 11,000 tons, equivalent to a value of more than 700 billion VND, of which the output of farmed shrimp will be 4,400 tons, equivalent to a value of 350 billion VND. Ms. Do Thi Duyen, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Yen district, said: In 2025, the shrimp farming area of the district will continue to be maintained as in 2024. From the beginning of the farming season, specialized agencies have increased sampling and monitoring, especially controlling aquatic breed suppliers in the province to ensure quality breeds when supplying to farming households. The locality applies digital technology to immediately notify the results of sample analysis to households that take samples to monitor the epidemic and households in the sampling area to monitor and warn the environment of concentrated aquaculture areas so that farming facilities can promptly and proactively take measures when there is a warning. Tien Yen identifies two key areas in shrimp farming development: Dong Rui and Hai Lang. Currently, the locality continues to plan farming areas to have solutions to invest in infrastructure to improve farming efficiency and maintain good economic conditions for the people.
The total inland farming area of the province is currently about 32,092 hectares, of which shrimp farming covers over 7,000 hectares with 2,765 farming facilities. In 2025, the Quang Ninh Department of Agriculture has determined to focus on innovating methods in shrimp farming to promote the advantages of pond water surface and increase the utilization system in the context of the area of many inland farming areas in the province is gradually shrinking; encouraging shrimp farming facilities to apply technology and techniques that have been effectively deployed in the province.
Mr. Phan Thanh Nghi, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, shared: For shrimp farming, the immediate focus is on disease prevention and control. In addition to maintaining and expanding the farming area, the unit will ensure farming output. Shrimp is identified as having room for development, so farmers need to improve farming facilities to be more modern, specifically applying greenhouse technology to help maintain stable winter farming, which will increase shrimp output and thereby increase the output for the whole year. To support shrimp farmers, the Department of Agriculture continues to study policies and mechanisms to support materials and equipment for farmers to invest in such as support poles, ropes, and tarpaulins, and will also provide technical guidance on winter shrimp farming.
In 2025, Quang Ninh Agriculture sector strives to Total annual aquatic product output reached 175,000 tons, an increase of 5.4% compared to 2024. Of which, shrimp farming output alone accounts for at least 25% of the total aquaculture output of the whole province.
