Jogging is very good for health.

Causes of lung pain when jogging

New to running: According to the American Lung Association (ALA), exercise requires pumping blood and oxygen throughout your body. Your heart and lungs will work harder to keep you going. If you haven't run much before or are in poor physical condition, you may have trouble breathing while running.

Mouth breathing: Breathing through your mouth doesn't get as much oxygen into your lungs as breathing through your nose, according to Houston Methodist Hospital. When you're low on oxygen, you'll feel discomfort in your lungs.

Cold weather: Running in cold weather can make your lungs more susceptible to soreness. According to the ALA, cold, dry air irritates your lungs, especially if you breathe a lot and quickly while running.

Air pollution: Running outdoors in polluted, smoky air can make breathing more difficult or painful.

Having asthma: According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), exercise-induced asthma, or exercise-induced bronchospasm, is a chronic condition that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways. People with exercise-induced asthma often have difficulty breathing or feel chest pain or tightness when running. These symptoms usually subside within an hour of stopping running.

Underlying medical conditions: According to the Cleveland Clinic, some underlying medical conditions that can cause lung discomfort and respiratory pain include rib inflammation, pneumonia, anxiety, and acid reflux.

Many new runners experience lung discomfort when they overexert themselves.

How to reduce lung pain when jogging

If you have lung pain and shortness of breath after running, your body will take rapid breaths through your mouth. Warming up properly can help you avoid lung pain while running.

Practice breathing through your nose and into your belly to slow your breathing and inhale more efficiently, recommends the ALA.

Depending on the air quality, you can choose to run indoors or outdoors. And if it's cold, consider using a mask to help warm the air you breathe.

In addition, asthma patients need to make sure to take their medication as directed by their doctor.
