Possess hypersonic missiles

On November 17, India officially announced the successful test of its first long-range hypersonic missile.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said it was a "historic moment" that brought India into the group of nations possessing this advanced military technology.

According to AFP , the test was conducted at Abdul Kalam Island off the east coast on the evening of November 16. Video images released by India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) showed a missile launching into the night sky, followed by a large trail of fire.

Hypersonic missiles are considered the most advanced missile technology today because they can fly lower, are harder to detect than conventional ballistic missiles, can reach their targets faster, and have the ability to change targets during flight. Currently, only the US, Russia, China, and North Korea have successfully tested this type of missile, while several other countries are developing similar technology.

The test came just days after China showcased its expanding military aviation capabilities at an air show, debuting the J-35A stealth fighter, attack drones and the HQ-19 surface-to-air missile system, designed to intercept ballistic missiles and hypersonic glide vehicles.

New Delhi is currently one of the biggest buyers of Russian weapons, including the S-400 missile defense system, despite the risk of US sanctions.
