Sneijder once played for Real Madrid. |
Despite being one of Real Madrid's most anticipated signings, Sneijder admitted that his time at the Bernabeu was not a perfect one. "It was a combination of many factors: personal life, injuries, changes in the board and the new direction of the club. I had great moments, but the time was not right for me to stay long-term," Sneijder shared.
Sneijder played for Real Madrid from 2007-2009, playing 66 matches and scoring 11 goals in all competitions. After leaving "Los Blancos", the former Dutch player joined Inter Milan, from which he won many prestigious titles - especially the UEFA Champions League championship in the 2009/2010 season.
Talking about his former teammate Xabi Alonso - now Real Madrid's head coach - Sneijder could not hide his confidence: "Xabi is very intelligent, that was evident when we played together. I believe he will succeed in Madrid. Xabi understands the club, the pressure and has new ideas. After what he has done with Leverkusen, I have complete confidence in him."
However, Sneijder also left a warning: “The problem is to manage the egos of the stars well. Great players need discipline and sacrifice. When they play for the team, not for themselves, Madrid become unstoppable. But it is up to the coach to maintain this balance.”
When asked about the 2010 Ballon d'Or, Sneijder did not hide his regret: "To be honest, I still feel sad. That year, I won the Champions League, won the domestic double and reached the World Cup final. I did everything, but Messi won. He is a great player, there is no doubt about that. The fact that fans still talk about me in 2010 shows that they recognized what I did, and that is the important thing."
Looking at the new generation, Sneijder is particularly impressed with young talent Lamine Yamal: “He has extraordinary potential, but is still very young. Talent is one thing, but spirit and discipline are another. If Yamal can stay focused and avoid temptations, he can reach the top.”
