Garbage backlog as collection vehicles 'taken for inspection'

VnExpressVnExpress25/05/2023

Gia Lai For the past three days, tens of thousands of households in An Khe town have been "tortured" by the stench of piles of garbage that have accumulated because the treatment unit has no vehicles to collect it.

On May 25, many garbage bags were piled up on sidewalks, tree roots, and at intersections in the town. Many trash cans were filled to the brim, spilling out. Flies and a strong stench arose, making people uncomfortable and holding their noses every time they passed by.

Ms. Tran Thi Cang, 33 years old, living on Ngo Thi Nham Street, Tay Son Ward, said that every month, families pay 15,000 VND for garbage collection. Waste treatment in the area is carried out by staff on Tuesdays and Fridays of the week. However, for the past three days, the garbage in the area has piled up but no one has come to take it away, the stench is so strong that residents are very miserable.

"This is a clean and beautiful road, but I see bags of garbage scattered everywhere, ruining the landscape as well as polluting the environment," said Ms. Cang, expressing dissatisfaction with the way the factory works. If the collection vehicle breaks down or the garbage treatment unit has problems, the people must be notified.

An Khe town has a population of over 70,000, and the amount of garbage collected each day is over 30 tons, collected by the An Khe solid waste treatment plant. The plant representative said that the unit has three cars (two 9-cubic-meter cars and the remaining 6-cubic-meter car) to collect garbage from 75 streets in the town. Every day, the plant collects over 20 streets.

However, since May 23, three garbage trucks have had to be inspected. Because the vehicles had problems that needed to be fixed before they could be inspected, it took time. "We are currently rushing to collect all the remaining garbage," said a representative of the factory.
