Journalist Kim Toan, whose birth name is Nguyen Kim Toan, was born in 1940 in Tan Trao commune ( Hai Phong ), and was a reporter and graphic designer for Kien An newspaper. In 1965, he volunteered to go to the southern battlefield, working for nearly 10 years with Giai Phong Newspaper, the mouthpiece of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam. With the pen name Cao Kim, he was a key writer and also fought directly in the propaganda armed forces of Saigon - Gia Dinh. He was once given a memorial service because he was believed to have died in the Mau Than Spring General Offensive of 1968, but later survived and returned, continuing to write until the day of total victory.

After the war, journalist Kim Toan continued to make many outstanding contributions in many different positions such as Editor-in-Chief of Hai Phong Newspaper, Chairman of Hai Phong Journalists Association, Standing Member of Vietnam Journalists Association .

Sharing at the film launch ceremony, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association Le Quoc Minh emphasized: “The event introducing the documentary film "Kim Toan - journalist, soldier" is a meaningful activity, paying tribute to the previous generation of journalists, those who wrote the heroic history of our country's revolutionary journalism. His journey as a journalist is a wordless epic, not only of one person but of an entire generation of journalists who lived, wrote and fought for the ideal of national independence and national renewal."
The film is over 30 minutes long, with a narrative format combining documentary images, handwritten letters, illustrations, and profound commentary, and was produced by director Nguyen Si Dai and his crew over a period of 2 years. The film not only honors an individual, but is also a vivid record of the history of revolutionary journalism, of journalists who lived and wrote in the midst of war.
Journalist Ha Duc Thanh, a colleague at Giai Phong Newspaper, shared: "Kim Toan is a person with an excellent memory, writes meticulously, vividly and retains many valuable documents. He is not only talented but also a virtuous person, quietly contributing."
Journalist Ho Quang Loi shared: "Working as a journalist in the enemy's rear, holding both a pen and a gun, journalist Kim Toan embodied the qualities of a revolutionary journalist: steadfast, courageous, and dedicated... Even though he is now 86 years old, his energy and spirit are still abundant, continuing to be an inspiring example for the next generation of journalists."
Commenting on the film, journalist Ho Quang Loi emphasized: Although the production crew is not made by professional filmmakers, this is an emotional film that touches the hearts of viewers. This is not only a tribute to an individual but also a worthy recognition for a whole generation of journalists who lived, fought and wrote for the ideal of independence and freedom of the Fatherland...
The film Kim Toan - journalist and soldier is a valuable document that will be preserved and introduced at the Vietnam Press Museum, contributing to spreading the image of journalists closely attached to the fate of the nation, adding inspiration and will to today's generation of journalists.
