Hungarian Parliament makes it difficult for Sweden to join NATO again

Lawmakers from Hungary's ruling Fidesz party have refused to attend an emergency vote on Sweden's bid to join NATO, demanding that the Nordic country's leaders meet Prime Minister Viktor Orban before they decide on the matter.

According to Russia Today, the Fidesz party announced that the ratification vote will take place in a regular parliamentary session, not an emergency session, and will only take place after the Swedish Prime Minister visits Hungary. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has expressed his willingness to make the visit, but said he will do so only after the Hungarian Parliament ratifies Sweden's NATO membership.

During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg last month, Mr Orban said he would urge his party to vote on ratification “as soon as possible”. While Hungary has not specifically supported Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, which both Sweden and Finland say is pushing them to apply for NATO membership, it has refused to follow other EU member states in sanctioning Moscow or supplying arms to Kiev.

Parliament in Budapest voted in favour of Finland's accession in March 2023 after months of political wrangling, but delayed a decision on Stockholm's bid for months.
