Qualcomm launches first AI Research and Development Center in Vietnam

The presence of Qualcomm's 3rd largest AI Research and Development Center in the world is expected to make Vietnam a leading AI Research and Innovation Center in the region.

Over the years, Vietnam has attracted large international technology corporations, thanks to its strategic location, preferential policies and abundant resources.

The presence and important moves such as setting up research centers of corporations such as Samsung, Nvidia or Qualcomm are expected to make Vietnam become the leading AI research and innovation center in the region.

On June 10 in Hanoi , Qualcomm Corporation officially launched its new Artificial Intelligence Research and Development (AI R&D) Center in Vietnam, marking an important milestone in its nearly two-decade journey to elevate the domestic technology ecosystem.

Following the acquisition of VinAI's Generative AI research division, Qualcomm's new center combines the group's world-class expertise with deep understanding of machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing in Vietnam.

This milestone is expected to enhance Qualcomm's capabilities in developing foundational AI models, while affirming the company's long-term presence in the research and development sector in Vietnam.

With a team of scientists , researchers and AI experts working in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the new AI R&D Center will be part of Qualcomm's global AI Research group, playing a key role in developing generative AI and agentic AI solutions for applications in many fields such as smartphones, personal computers, extended reality (XR), automobiles and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

After the deal with VinAl, Dr. Bui Hai Hung - former General Director of VinAl will take on the position of Vice President of Technology at Qualcomm. With decades of experience in researching Al/ML technology at prestigious centers such as SRI and Google DeepMind,

Dr. Hung will be in charge of strategic research direction in Vietnam, while contributing to Qualcomm's AI research direction globally.

Dr. An Mei Chen - Vice President of Engineering at Qualcomm, with decades of experience and extensive expertise in many areas of Qualcomm's technology and licensing, will lead the engineering management team, and be responsible for expansion into other engineering areas.

The center will focus on technological innovation from basic research to platform building, promoting regional human resource development and academic collaborations, and directly contributing to Qualcomm's global product roadmap as well as the development of the AI ​​technology industry in Vietnam.

Qualcomm's operations in Vietnam are closely aligned with national strategies on artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology and digital transformation, with a focus on technology transfer, ecosystem development cooperation and internal capacity building.

"Qualcomm's choice of Vietnam as the destination for its AI Research and Development Center demonstrates its belief in the potential and capacity of the IT workforce in Vietnam. It is also a vivid demonstration of the increasingly deepening comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the United States. We believe that the Center, once operational, will enhance AI research capacity in Vietnam and become a Center that contributes to the training and development of international engineers, experts, and the promotion of sustainable socio-economic development in Vietnam," Deputy Minister Le Xuan Dinh emphasized.

“The launch of the AI ​​R&D Center not only demonstrates our long-term commitment to supporting breakthrough research and talent development in Vietnam, but also contributes to the journey of making Vietnam a center for advanced technology innovation,” said Alex Rogers, President of Technology Licensing (QTL) and External Cooperation, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. at the event.

“By combining Vietnam’s elite human resources with Qualcomm’s global scale and expertise, we expect to enhance our ability to develop advanced, energy-efficient AI solutions for a variety of applications, while strengthening Vietnam’s role in the global innovation value chain,” said Thieu Phuong Nam, General Director of Qualcomm Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

In Vietnam, Qualcomm has two representative offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and the first Research and Development (R&D) Center in Southeast Asia in Hanoi in 2020.

Qualcomm has had a prominent initiative, the Qualcomm Vietnam Innovation Challenge (QVIC), which is held annually to incubate and support Vietnamese technology startups in finance, technology, business, and intellectual property./.
