The APEC multifunctional complex is defined as a strategic project of national stature.

New look

When the sunset falls on Bai Truong beach, the water surface is like a red silk sheet stretching to the horizon. Standing next to the coconut trees in front of her house, looking towards Duong Dong Lake, Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Em (39 years old), living in Ward 5 Duong Dong, Phu Quoc Special Zone, shared: "I heard that Duong Dong 2 Lake and Cua Can Lake are preparing for investment, after completion they will provide tens of thousands of cubic meters of water per day, I am very happy, because in the future we will not only keep water for the people but also for tourists, for future generations".

For Ms. Thuy Em, those projects are not just numbers, but breath, rhythm of life, a commitment to a safe, clean and sustainably developed Phu Quoc.

South of Phu Quoc Island.

More than 20km away, Mr. Ho Vu Phuong, living in Bai Thom quarter (Phu Quoc special zone), every morning with a group of friends carries a net along the beaches near his house, diligently picking up each piece of trash and each bottle. Mr. Phuong clearly remembers the mornings when the sea was full of trash, the waves crashing up and covering the sand in white.

“Seeing the visitors standing around, shaking their heads and walking away, I felt very sad. I love the sea and the island but am helpless in the face of garbage. Now hearing that the government is preparing to invest in waste-to-energy plants, waste treatment areas, and centralized waste treatment systems, I am very happy. This is a solution and a ray of hope to preserve the beauty of the island,” Mr. Phuong confided, his eyes shining with confidence.

Tourists enjoy paragliding at Sao Beach (Phu Quoc Special Zone).

According to statistics, Phu Quoc generates about 180 - 200 tons of garbage every day, which has become a hot spot for environmental pollution, especially household waste, plastic cups, and nylon bags. Meanwhile, Dong Cay Sao waste treatment plant has a burning capacity of 144 tons/day and night, not enough to handle all of it, causing Dong Cay Sao temporary landfill to swell and smell.

To solve this difficult problem, Phu Quoc Special Zone has been promoting investment in a series of new factories: Bai Bon waste-to-energy plant, An Thoi domestic solid waste treatment plant, centralized wastewater treatment system in An Thoi and Duong Dong areas... The projects preparing for APEC 2027 will be a solid foundation to protect the environment, preserve livelihoods and ensure the quality of life for the people.

Phu Quoc is gradually "wearing a new coat", modern and civilized. Projects such as APEC Avenue, about 3km long, 68m wide; Provincial Road 975 connecting the airport to the convention center; urban train line of more than 20km; APEC Conference Center with a capacity of thousands of seats... are gradually shaping the "backbone" of development. This is not only preparation for an international conference, but also an affirmation of the determination to change the appearance in the future, bringing the pearl island to the world .

Phu Quoc International Airport is invested to become the world's leading modern airport.

Green Future

Speaking at the conference held on July 13, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized: “The works serving this conference must be done in the spirit of speed, beauty, worthy of the culture imbued with national identity, worthy of the role and position of the country, ensuring the works will last a hundred years, a thousand years”. Those instructions seemed to add energy to each worker, each engineer on the construction site, especially adding confidence to the people of the pearl island.

Mr. Nguyen Vu Khac Huy, Permanent Vice Chairman of the An Giang Tourism Association affirmed: “Phu Quoc is no longer simply a resort paradise. In the near future, tourists will come here to attend conferences, exhibitions, and business connections. Most importantly, they will find a “green paradise”.

The net zero target is becoming the “compass” guiding the journey of sustainable development. Waste-to-energy plants, wastewater treatment plants, recycling systems, underground infrastructure projects in Duong Dong and An Thoi… all aim to reduce emissions and preserve the pristine beauty. A Phu Quoc that “breathes” with the world, living in harmony with the sea, forests and people.

The city that never sleeps in Phu Quoc Special Zone.

Night falls, the small coffee shop by Dinh Cau beach is brightly lit with yellow lights. A group of local youths sit and sing, the guitar sounds echoing in the cool sea breeze. The young people talk about the future of Phu Quoc, about the train line connecting the beaches, about the eco-urban area that will soon be built next to Ong Quan mountain. "Phu Quoc will develop greener, more harmoniously", said Nguyen Van Vinh, a tourist from Can Tho city.

Not only infrastructure, change also comes from mindset. People start to cherish every liter of water, every grain of sand... Coastal restaurants no longer use disposable plastic products, hotels grow their own vegetables, install solar panels, and classify trash. Every small action of each person contributes to creating a "green wave" spreading across the pearl island.

The huge investment figures - 137,138 billion VND for 21 key projects - are not only economic targets, but also the determination of the government, businesses and the community, a commitment to turn Phu Quoc into a "never-sleeping center" of tourism, conferences, international trade, while still being the "green lung" of the entire Mekong Delta.

In the near future, when APEC delegations set foot on the expanded Phu Quoc International Airport, cross the tree-lined APEC Avenue, and enter the conference center overlooking the sea, delegates will not only see the magnificence, but also clearly feel the spirit of hospitality, the effort to “live green”, the story of an island that was once favored by nature, but now knows how to repay, protect and regenerate.

Tourists have fun at Bai Truong, Phu Quoc Special Zone.

One day soon, Ms. Thuy Em will no longer have to worry about Phu Quoc lacking fresh water. Mr. Phuong will slowly sip a cup of coffee by the trash-free Bai Thom beach. Young people will continue to sing about the sea, the wind, and the night trains connecting deserted beaches.

Those beautiful things are not a distant dream, but the journey Phu Quoc is on, the belief being built with each brick, each drop of water, each green tree. A future wide enough to embrace the world, deep enough to preserve the soul of the homeland.

Phu Quoc - the pearl island - is ready to reach new heights, reach out to the ocean and carve its name as a living testament to the story of green, sustainable, humane and proud development.
