Every year, the General Livestock Cooperative supplies the market with nearly 100,000 commercial sea ducks and over 1.4 million eggs.
Choosing biosafety farming
In the context that many livestock households and farms still maintain traditional livestock farming habits, focusing on output, so they often face situations of oversupply, "good harvest, low price"... members of the Dong Tien Hai Commune Livestock Cooperative have chosen to join together to raise livestock in a biosafety direction.
Mr. Ngo Van Duan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dong Tien Hai Commune Livestock Cooperative, said: The Cooperative currently has 64 members, with main activities such as: Breeding services, animal feed, veterinary medicine, and product consumption linkage. Established after the "storm" of African swine fever, in order to have sustainable efficiency in livestock farming, the Cooperative selected specialty livestock, applying biosafety farming processes to production. From the model transferred by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, the Cooperative selected Dai Xuyen 15 sea duck as its main product, building the brand "Dong Xuyen Sea Duck" because this is a dual-purpose duck breed, can forage well in the wild, significantly reducing feed costs while the meat quality is delicious, adapting well to fresh water, brackish water and salt water.
The General Livestock Cooperative chooses 15 Dai Xuyen sea duck as its main product and builds its brand.
In addition to the farming process guided by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, the Cooperative also adds AM garlic preparation of the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture to drinking water to help the ducks' digestive system better, absorbing more nutrients. In addition, the Cooperative does not use regular bran but orders a separate production company according to the Cooperative's formula based on the growth stages of the ducks. The time to raise ducks will also be longer, 90 - 120 days for meat ducks.
Mr. Phan Van Quang in Quy Duc village, Dong Tien Hai commune, a member of the cooperative, said: Previously, we raised livestock in a "catch-and-grab" manner, so we had some successful and some unsuccessful batches. Joining the cooperative, strictly following the biosafety farming process, although the farming time is longer, the selling price is higher and does not depend on the market, so the income is stable.
In addition to Dai Xuyen 15 sea ducks, members of the cooperative also raise poultry, white-legged shrimp, apple snails, frogs, etc. Products produced according to the cooperative's process are all purchased by the cooperative, supported in finding outlets, bringing an average profit of over 90 million VND/member/year.
Building a successful brand
Strictly following safe farming processes, Dong Xuyen sea ducks produce delicious, lean meat with high nutritional content. Sea duck eggs are much larger than regular duck eggs, with thick, fragrant, and rich shells, so they are favored by customers even though the selling price is twice as high as mass-farmed products. The cooperative's commercial sea ducks are assessed to meet the requirements of VietGAHP standards and the sea duck meat, sea duck eggs, and apple snails are granted 4-star and 3-star OCOP certificates. Recently, these 3 products were in the top 50 and 100 products and services meeting trusted standards in 2024 organized by the Vietnam Consumer Protection Association. This is a recognition from consumers for the cooperative and its members in their persistent efforts to choose biosafety farming.
Apple snail products of the General Livestock Cooperative are recognized as achieving 3-star OCOP.
Mr. Tran Van Tra, Director of the Cooperative, said: Since the Cooperative's products were recognized as 3-star and 4-star OCOP, the brand has gained a foothold in the market inside and outside the province. In particular, Dong Xuyen sea duck products and Dong Xuyen sea duck eggs are available at supermarkets and restaurant chains in many provinces and cities: Hung Yen, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hanoi , Ninh Binh, Da Nang... through traditional sales channels and e-commerce platforms. Each year, the Cooperative supplies the market with nearly 100,000 commercial sea ducks, over 1.4 million eggs, 5-6 tons of snails...
With 6 years of operation, Dong Tien Hai Commune Livestock Cooperative has affirmed its effectiveness thanks to its dynamism, innovation in production, business and methodical orientation, becoming a bright spot in collective economic development.
