Mr. Hoang Nam Tien, Vice Chairman of FPT University Council, suddenly passed away at 12:45 on July 31 due to a stroke, confirmed by FPT Corporation.

Mr. Hoang Nam Tien was born in 1969. He is known as the youngest son of Major General Hoang Dan (1928-2003) and his wife, National Assembly delegate Nguyen Thi An Vinh (1933-2022).

Mr. Tien joined FPT Corporation right after graduating from the Information Technology Department of the University of Technology in 1993. At the age of 26, he was assigned to be the Head of the Business Department of the enterprise despite his young age.

After many years of struggle, when he reached the age of 30, he rose to the position of Sales Manager at FPT Corporation. However, what he was worried about was that he had not been able to do anything for himself when he already had relationships and a stable family.

At the age of 32, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien decided to quit his job and go to the US to study for 3 months. After returning to FPT, he changed and brought the business department to a new stage, contributing greatly to the group's revenue.

“Steering” FPT Telecom during Covid-19

Mr. Hoang Nam Tien was elected Chairman of FPT Telecom from March 3, 2020.

He is said to be the one who “steered” FPT Telecom through the Covid-19 period. He once said that when he took over the telecommunications sector, the Covid-19 pandemic hit and caused all businesses to collapse. He considered difficulties like a battle, and through each battle, generals and soldiers matured. Therefore, he considered it an opportunity to renew himself.

In the period 2020-2024, FPT Telecom's revenue grew strongly, with profit nearly doubling from 1,575 billion (in 2020) to more than 2,800 billion VND.

Mission "providing global competitiveness" at FPT Education

When asked "What is attractive enough to make you stick with FPT Corporation over the years?" , Mr. Hoang Nam Tien once answered that at FPT, he gets to do the work he loves and loves the work he does.

He said that in the corporation, he experienced 6 completely different jobs, not just 6 positions but 6 fields, from business, real estate, software, telecommunications... and most recently education.

From April 2023 to present, Mr. Tien has been appointed as Vice Chairman of the Board of FPT University (FPT Education). He said that FPT Education has set him a mission, which is to provide global competitiveness to a large number of learners, contributing to expanding the intellectual frontier of the country.

He also left students with 5 learning strategies to achieve the highest efficiency: Learn from teachers, leaders, people who are better than you in terms of professional expertise, learn from your own parents; learn from colleagues, learn from friends; "a child is better than his father, the family is blessed" - that is, one must learn from younger people; each person must learn by himself; in this period and in the future, one must know how to learn from artificial intelligence AI.

Notable "statements"

With a straightforward, humorous but experienced style, Mr. Tien is also an inspiration to young people, especially the startup generation in Vietnam.

He left many memorable statements that were well received and shared on social networks, including: “If you want to change jobs whenever you encounter difficulties or frustrations, you will never be successful in your life. Change jobs to leave with glory. When you finish a successful project, when everyone is praising you the most, then stand up and leave. When you are in a new place, you can absolutely say, in the old place I could have been promoted to a higher position, but in the new place I want to have new experiences and challenges.”

Or “Degrees are not important - this must be said frankly, but each degree proves that you have passed an exam. Degrees are not everything, but those degrees are the stars on your chest. The more stars the better, but when we go to work, we need other abilities”.

“There is a funny saying that goes, ‘If you want to be at the top, you have to be persistent and work hard every day.’ But don’t believe that because if you just work hard and persevere, wouldn’t there be millions of people at the top? It’s a bit absurd, you need a little luck. People with excellent qualities, abilities, knowledge, abilities, and experience who still don’t succeed, then we have to say that they need a little more luck,” he advises young people when starting to build their careers.

With Gen Z, Mr. Tien is also famous for sharing very close things, such as: "Gen Z people should really change their jobs after 2-3 years. You should also seriously think about changing your career after a certain number of years if you feel bored and disappointed. This must be supported and there is nothing special about it";

“For Gen Z, a formula that I created myself is Gen Z + Gen Human (a new generation of humans). X Humans can turn AI tools, artificial intelligence, robots... into their own "servants";

“If you want a salary of 10,000 USD, turn off your phone and stop reading comments on social networks.”

Unfinished AI concerns

Recently, he has shared a lot about AI. He is also the author of the book “Application of AI in Business”, providing an overview of AI and leadership thinking in the digital age.

“In the past, we talked about illiteracy - meaning not knowing how to read or write. Today, we talk about technology illiteracy, meaning not knowing about AI and Bigdata. Among the skills required for workers, people have asked for proficiency in Words, Excel, PowerPoint, but now they need skills in using AI and Bigdata applications. The world has changed, and if we don't do it, how will we know if it's right or wrong? If we don't do it, how will we know if it's right or not? That spirit has always permeated Elon Musk's life,” he said.

It can be seen that Mr. Tien not only imparted knowledge but also inspired the spirit of action, not afraid of failure and always aiming for autonomy. His departure caused great regret, many people expressed that this was a loss for the technology and education sector in Vietnam. However, the philosophies, statements and spirit he left behind will continue to lead many young generations on the journey to conquer great aspirations.
