Each season is a season of storytelling.
“I watched the play “Leaves Sing Like Rain” from the first performance, and watching it again today was still full of emotions as if I had touched the lives of the characters,” student Anh Minh, an audience member on the opening night of the season themed “In the Middle of the Road”, shared. “In the Middle of the Road” is the 10th season of the Humanities Journalism Drama Stage, performed by the Drama Club of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City).
This year's performance season, in addition to the successful plays of previous seasons such as Leaves Sing Like Rain, Lying Crying Alone, Sad All Night... The Journalism and Humanity Drama Stage also introduces the new play Stepping Up to the Top of Sorrow, inspired by the short story Sorrow on the Top of Puvan by writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu. This is a short play but is considered very difficult because it focuses on psychology, struggles, and inner turmoil. The play mobilized 40 students to practice for 4 months to have sublime moments on stage.
The audience is the one who sees the students' efforts most clearly. Audience member Minh Trong, a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology (HULIFT), commented: "There are many scenes in the play that moved me and my friends. Knowing that you are just amateurs, you must have put in a lot of effort to do so." Audience member Hoang Linh Lan, a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema, commented: "The stage is a movement but you did it very professionally. From the dramatic language, the rhythmic coordination to the simultaneous, layered, and methodical staging techniques. The most impressive thing is that you boldly expressed new perspectives on old issues."
Love drama with all your heart
The Journalism and Humanities Drama Stage originated from a small, non-professional drama group, formed during the 2017 Spring Volunteer Campaign of students of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication (School of Social Sciences and Humanities). In 2018, the stage officially launched with nearly 50 members, aiming to bring drama closer to students in particular and young people in general. In 2021, the drama team officially became a club with an increasingly professional orientation.
Duc Huy, founder, scriptwriter, and consultant of the Journalism and Humanity Drama Stage, shared: “Student drama has many limitations such as funding, personnel, etc., so at first everyone thought it could only be performed for 1-2 nights. However, with much effort, the stage has now gone beyond the limits of students, and has produced long plays, with the number of scripts and performances reaching more than 20.” That is not only a number but also a guarantee for the passion of young people. Many students of the stage told about the times they practiced at coffee shops, while performing and learning about acting, and when making props, they took the opportunity to learn lines. Or the “backstage” team that also did makeup and dialogue prompting. “Back then, we were not familiar with makeup, so before each performance, the backstage atmosphere was bustling because we had to ask about everything. After 10 seasons, now everyone has full makeup, and can do any makeup for any model.”
When asked which moment left the most impression, everyone said that it was when the applause from the stage was endless, when they turned backstage and saw familiar faces - people who had shared an unforgettable journey together. Vo Ngoc Quynh Nhu, one of the core actors of the stage, expressed: “Many friends and acquaintances have said that it is just a student play, why do we have to put in so much effort? Actually, there were times when I wanted to stop because of the pressures of life, because there were so many other jobs to complete. However, when I saw the joy and happiness of everyone on stage after each play, I wanted to continue on this path, growing up with my friends. Even though I don't know where I will go in the future, while I still can, I still want to live with my passion.”
Entering its 10th performance season, the Journalism and Humanity Drama Theater is preparing for new plays. According to Duc Huy, the scripts are often inspired by the ideas, details, and thoughts of everyday life to convey messages that are close, not distant. That is also the desire of young people who love the theater, who are constantly striving with the desire to contribute their small part to bring people stories of humanistic value, illuminating faith in the good things in life.
