In order to solve the serious traffic congestion at hot spots, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has directed the Department of Construction to coordinate with the Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects of Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Works (Traffic Board) to urgently prepare documents to adjust the investment policy of the overpass project at three key traffic intersections: Ly Thai To Intersection, Nguyen Tri Phuong Intersection and Bon Xa Intersection.
The construction of overpasses at intersections with high traffic volume is expected to reduce intersections and conflicts between traffic flows, thereby significantly improving the urban traffic situation.
Ly Thai To intersection (Vuon Lai ward and Ban Co ward), where Dien Bien Phu, Le Hong Phong, Ly Thai To and Ngo Gia Tu streets intersect, is one of the intersections with the highest traffic volume in the city.
Currently, traffic here is organized in the form of a self-regulating roundabout. However, according to the reporter's records, during rush hours, this area often experiences traffic jams and conflicts.
This situation makes it difficult for all vehicles, even ambulances have trouble moving through here.
Ms. Dung (62 years old), a local resident, shared: "This intersection area often experiences traffic jams, especially during rush hour. On days when there are many passenger cars and buses passing by, traffic circulation is very difficult."
According to the plan being studied by the Traffic Department, the overpass at Ly Thai To Intersection will be built along the main Ly Thai To axis, combining the branches on Le Hong Phong Street, with a total estimated investment of about 420 billion VND. This solution aims to separate the flow of vehicles going straight and turning, minimizing intersections and conflicts, contributing to improving the congestion that has lasted for many years.
Not far from Ly Thai To Intersection is Nguyen Tri Phuong Intersection (Dien Hong Ward, Vuon Lai Ward and An Dong Ward), the intersection of three major streets Nguyen Tri Phuong, Ngo Gia Tu and Nguyen Chi Thanh.
This place also has an old name, Minh Mang Six-Way Junction. Traffic jams and collisions often occur on the roads here.
During rush hour, many roads in the Nguyen Tri Phuong intersection area experience prolonged traffic congestion.
Bon Xa Intersection (Phu Thanh Ward and Binh Tri Dong Ward) is the intersection of busy roads such as Thoai Ngoc Hau - Binh Long - Huong Lo 2 - Le Van Quoi - Phan Anh - Hoa Binh .
This is one of the most densely populated areas, and also one of the city's traffic jam "black spots".
At the Bon Xa Intersection, it is expected to invest in building an Elipse-shaped central island combined with an overpass (floor +1) to accommodate 4 lanes on the Hoa Binh - Le Van Quoi road axis, with a total estimated investment of about 2,464 billion VND.
The encroachment of sidewalks by small traders on Huong Lo 2 Street has further aggravated the traffic congestion problem at Bon Xa Intersection. A small trader at Bon Xa Market said: "Many small traders' shops encroach on the sidewalks, making it difficult for vehicles to pass. When the city comes to inspect, they clean up very quickly, and then everything goes back to normal when the inspection team passes by."
According to the plan, the investment proposal documents will be completed and submitted to the competent authority for approval in the fourth quarter of 2025. If approved, the projects will proceed with site clearance and start construction in the second and third quarters of 2027, with a construction time of approximately 12-15 months. The construction of overpasses at these intersections is expected to be a key solution to reduce intersections, separate traffic flows, increase traffic efficiency and reduce congestion, contributing to significantly improving the quality of life of Ho Chi Minh City residents.
