AP commented that this summer, Hollywood movie theaters are turning into Wastelands (an imaginary place in the world of Mad Max ).
According to Comscore , theaters in the United States and Canada sold an estimated $125 million in tickets this past weekend, down about 40 percent from the same period last year.
The New York Times said this was the lowest Memorial Day box office result in 43 years after adjusting for inflation (excluding 2020 when theaters closed due to COVID-19).

The Garfield Movie is a family-friendly animated film.
But no matter which film wins, they will continue a "sluggish" summer movie season for Hollywood, when before that IF (Imaginary Friends) only reached 33.7 million USD in the first week (expectation was 40 million).
Hollywood had expected Furiosa to burn up the box office. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, receiving rave reviews from Warner Bros.

But one of the reasons is said to be lead actress Anya Taylor-Joy.
She has a stellar acting track record with small-budget arthouse films and the Netflix hit The Queen's Gambit , but has never headlined a big-budget action film.
Scott Mendelson, a box office analyst, explains:
"People are not enthusiastic about prequels, because the important role is not played by the actor who played it successfully, but by a younger, less famous actor."
Furiosa was released "too early" and "too late": too early after the box office boom of Dune 2 - a blockbuster with similar visuals; and too late after Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), when the boom had died down.
Additionally, Hollywood's April box office suffered from a lack of films, with studios blaming the lingering fallout from the 2023 writers and actors' strikes.
