According to Ms. Nguyen Thi D., the patient's mother, right after birth, it was discovered that the child had an abnormal tumor in the spine and was transferred to the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi on June 28.
After examination, the doctors determined: The child had meningomyelocele - a rare disease caused by congenital defects in the child's spinal canal.
This is a serious medical condition that causes loss or dysfunction of the nervous system, affects appearance, daily activities and poses many potential health risks to the patient.
Dr. Nguyen Van Man said: We decided to perform surgery for myelomeningocele in children. This is the optimal method to treat myelomeningocele, but it is extremely complicated in terms of technique, anesthesia, and post-operative resuscitation, especially when the patient is still very young. Children need to be carefully prepared before surgery and have their neurological damage assessed.
Currently, the surgery was successful, the child is continuing to receive treatment, closely monitoring for complications, especially infection. Fortunately, this child was discovered and taken to the hospital in time.

“Pregnant mothers should have regular check-ups to detect congenital spinal abnormalities in particular and other abnormalities. After birth, if a meningocele is detected, they should be immediately transferred to a facility with a neurosurgery department for monitoring and surgery. Avoid rupture, as it can easily cause meningocele infection and further damage,” Dr. Nguyen Van Man recommended.
