In the early morning of July 19, Leverkusen lost 1-5 to the U20 Flamengo team on Ten Hag's debut day. Speaking after the match, the former MU coach said: "The result looks pretty bad, but I don't care about that in the pre-season. Of course, we can't lose the match. The important thing right now is that I don't lose any players (due to injury)."
The Dutch coach affirmed that he wanted to look at the positive side after the match, considering this a valuable lesson to help build a better team.
In the last match, coach Ten Hag experimented with many young players in the starting lineup. Main striker Victor Boniface also started but also played ineffectively. The remaining pillars of Leverkusen including Granit Xhaka, Alex Grimaldo and Patrick Schick were only brought on the field from the second half.
The Bundesliga representative lost 4 goals in the first 45 minutes. In the second half, young player Montrell Culbreath scored the only goal for Leverkusen in the 71st minute, ending a forgettable away match day.
This result marked Leverkusen's first defeat since parting ways with two key stars Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong along with coach Alonso. Despite bringing in new players such as Mark Flekken, Jarrell Quansah and Malik Tillman, Ten Hag still has a lot of work to do to rebuild the team.
Leverkusen will have their next friendly match against Bochum on July 27 at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion in Germany.
