(CLO) President-elect Donald Trump announced on Saturday (November 17) that he has chosen Chris Wright, an oil and gas CEO and strong advocate for the use of fossil fuels, to lead the US Department of Energy.
Chris Wright is the founder and CEO of Liberty Energy, an oil and gas services company based in Denver, Colorado. He is known for his pro-fossil fuel views and criticism of global efforts to combat climate change.

Last year, Wright shared on LinkedIn: "There is no climate crisis, and we are not going through any energy transition."
Despite having no previous political experience, Wright has written extensively about the role of fossil fuels in reducing global poverty. He also made headlines in 2019 when he drank fracking fluid on television to prove it was “harmless.”
If confirmed by the US Senate, Wright would replace Jennifer Granholm, who supports electric vehicles, renewable energy such as wind, solar and other carbon-free energy sources.
Under Wright's leadership, the Department of Energy is expected to focus on increasing oil and natural gas production, managing the strategic petroleum reserve, promoting nuclear power, and reducing energy costs.
The US Department of Energy not only manages domestic energy but also undertakes many strategic tasks, including energy diplomacy , nuclear weapons management, and support for new energy technologies.
Although US oil production has reached record levels under President Joe Biden, Wright will face many challenges in promoting the energy industry, especially when balancing economic development with international criticism of climate change.
The nomination of Chris Wright is a clear signal that the Trump administration is returning to a policy of prioritizing fossil fuels, abandoning global cooperative efforts to combat climate change, and aiming to maximize America's traditional energy potential.
